White explains how he and Gabriel overcome language barrier at Arsenal


en White has revealed that he and Gabriel Magalhaes “click” as a centre-back partnership despite problems with the language barrier.

The Arsenal defenders have formed a stout pairing for Mikel Arteta, with Arsenal having conceded just once since the pair were first utilised in combination in September.

Despite admitting that Gabriel’ English and his own Portuguese are limited, White says that the pair have nonetheless been immediately developed chemistry.

“He doesn’t speak much English. I don’t speak Portuguese,” White explained during a livestream on Twitch. “There’s not much we can say to each other.

“[But] we know what we have to do. We just click.”

White was lured at some expense to the Emirates Stadium after an impressive season for Brighton having returned to the club after a successful loan spell at Leeds.

The naturally left-sided Gabriel has coalesced well with White, who narrowly missed out on an England call-up last week.

Asked if Gabriel and White were gelling quicker than expected, the Spaniard said: “Yes, because they never played together, because Gabi is still a little bit struggling with the language and they didn’t have any time to work together in pre-season.

“They are getting a really good connection, good chemistry and I think their qualities match and compliment each other really well. I think both of them were terrific.”

During the same live stream session, White also said that he finds Gabriel Martinelli the most skilful player in Arsenal training before tipping youngster Charlie Patino as one to watch.
