Tuchel has responded by leading Chelsea to the final four of the Champions League, with the Blues beating Porto 2-1 on aggregate in the quarters.
With the quarter-final and semi-final fixtures having been drawn together, Chelsea knew that they would be facing either Real Madrid or Liverpool for a place in the final.
Real Madrid look the likeliest opponents having beaten Liverpool 3-1 in their first leg at home in the Spanish capital, but Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have form for epic comebacks in Europe.
Should Chelsea beat either Real or Liverpool over two legs to reach the final, then they will face either PSG – who saw off holders Bayern Munich in Tuesday night’s other quarter-final – or one of Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund, who complete their tie on Wednesday.
