Wijnaldum makes frank Liverpool training admission amid mounting injury crisis

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum says the Reds aren’t really training at the moment as Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to pick up injuries during their crowded fixture list.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker became the ninth senior player to join the club’s injury list prior to Tuesday’s Champions League clash at home to Ajax, which the Reds won 1-0.

Alisson’s hamstring issue sees him join Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri on the sidelines, with centre-backs Van Dijk and Gomez out with long-term knee issues.

Wijnaldum is one of the select few Reds players who haven’t picked up an injury this season, something he says he’s thankful for.

Wijnaldum faced Ajax on Tuesday

“I don’t really have anything to complain about. I am blessed to stay fit during this period,” he told Dutch media, via, after the Ajax game.

“I hope I can hold on until the end of the season. That’s going to be very difficult, but I’m confident.”

When pressed on what training was currently like at Liverpool, Wijnaldum added: “It’s really just playing matches and resting at the moment.

“There’s not really any training because there’s not a lot of time for that.”

The Dutchman remains a Liverpool regular despite being out of contract at the end of the season, with former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand urging the Reds to keep him at the club.

The Dutchman says the Reds aren’t able to train much at the moment

“I got to be honest: I love this player,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He’s very selfless, his intelligence, he’s underrated completely because he can play every single midfield position in that central area.

“He’s plays a No.10 role for Holland, the way he defends here [for Liverpool ].”

“We do get players who you play with in your career who fans probably don’t appreciate as much.”
