Liverpool boss Klopp labels Salah ‘best in the world’

Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has sent a message to old team-mate Sadio Mane after the attacker broke a new milestone.

Following a poor season for the Reds last term, Mane has recovered his form for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the early stages of this season.

The 29-year-old had scored five goals in nine games in all competitions heading into Saturday’s clash with Premier League strugglers Watford.

Those goals in the first three months of the campaign has also taken him to a tally of 99 goals in the Premier League, a figure he has achieved in just seven seasons in the English top-flight.

It took just eight minutes of the game against the Hornets for Mane to score his 100 th goal in England.

The Senegalese attacker latched onto Mohamed Salah’s perfectly weighted outside-of-the-boot pass.

He then needed only one touch to tuck the ball past Watford keeper Ben Foster and into the bottom corner of the net.

That meant that he became only the third African player to reach the 100 goals landmark, and just the third player to do so without scoring a penalty.

That goal also opened the floodgates for the Reds, who temporarily climbed to the top of the league by hammering the Hornets 5-0.

Wijnaldum spent five years playing alongside Mane at Anfield, winning the Premier League and Champions League together.

The Dutchman departed Liverpool at the end of last season, joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

But the 30-year-old clearly still holds strong connections with his former club, having posted a message congratulating Mane on his achievement.

Wijnaldum posted a graphic of Mane posing, with the Senegal flag behind him and “100 Premier League goals” down the left-hand side.

In his message alongside that picture, the PSG star also sent his own message of congratulations to his former team-mate.

“Congrats Sadio with this incredible achievement,” Wijnaldum wrote in his tweet.

Mane was also delighted to reach the landmark figure, but insisted after the win at Watford that his focus was on winning more trophies for the Reds.

“Honestly, when I came to the Premier League my dream was to score as many as I can and especially to win trophies,” Mane told Liverpoolfc.com.

“So today I’m very happy and very proud to score 100 goals. Hopefully more goals [are] coming and also trophies coming.

“Obviously we played very well today. From the beginning we had a very, very fast start and created many chances. We scored five goals, five wonderful goals. I think we deserved to win today.

“Of course, we knew the manager, he was in the Premier League and especially won it. But we were more focused on ourselves in training.

“It’s what we did for the weekend and [over] the weeks, we worked very hard and we showed it today. It was just incredible and hopefully we’re going to keep like this.”
