Wild scenes as Scotland celebrate historic Euro 2020 qualification


cotland‘s Euro 2020 play-off win sparked jubliant scenes amongst the squad and fans as a 22-year wait for a major tournament qualification ended.

Goalkeeper David Marshall sent Scotland secured a first tournament place since 1998 when he saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty in a shoot-out win over Serbia.

Ryan Christie, who opened the scoring in normal win, underlined the emotion of the moment in his post-match interview, hoping the win was a “monkey off the back” for the country.

“It’s just for everything,” he told Sky Sports. “I’m gone… for the whole nation, it’s been a horrible year for everyone and we knew we could give a little something to this country.”

Amid varying levels of Covid rules across the country, football fans were out in force to mark the historic moment.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon joined in with the celebrations, tweeting shortly after full-time after congratulations to “Steve cleark and the team”.
