Winks comes clean over wondergoal: ‘I’d love to say I meant it!’

arry Winks has confessed that his 56-yard wonderstrike in Tottenham’s win over Ludogorets was a fluke – but manager Jose Mourinho says he should have claimed he meant it.

Spurs strolled to a 4-0 win over the Bulgarian side in Thursday night’s Europa League group stage clash, to move within a point of qualifying for the knockout phase.

Summer signing Carlos Vinicius scored his first two goals for the club before Winks’ freakish effort sparked debate.

The England midfielder picked the ball up wide on the left and found the top corner via both the post and crossbar, but from his sheepish celebration it was immediately clear that had not been his intended target.

Afterwards, the 24-year-old told BT Sport: “I’d love to sit here and say that I did [mean it], but I’ve got to be honest and say no. I saw Gaz [Gareth Bale] run in. I’ll take it at the end of the day.

“It has been a while [since I last scored] but I am happy with the way the team played.”

When told of Winks’ confession, Mourinho said: “He is too honest! I am not happy with him!

“With a goal like that you have to say you meant it, but a good kid. He is honest.”
