Bluesky now has 10 million users | TechCrunch

Social network Bluesky said Monday that it now has more than 10 million users on the platform. This is largely thanks to the rapid growth of the network in the past few weeks after Elon Musk-owned X was shuttered in Brazil.

“If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first 10 million users on Bluesky!” the company said in a post. Bluesky also has a fun easter egg on its home page. When you click the celebration emoji, you can now see your joining number on the platform and share it to your friends.

Last month, a top court banned X in Brazil and established a fine for users accessing the service using a VPN. Post that, other social networks such as Meta’s Threads and Bluesky soared in popularity. Currently, they are in the top 10 spots in the App Store and Play Store ratings for the social media category in Brazil.

Bluesky rapidly gained 3 million users within days of X’s ban in Brazil, with its overall user count going past 9 million earlier this month. The company said more than 85% of new users were from Brazil.

Last week, Bluesky also noted that it was seeing record activity on the platform after the injection of new users. Because of people signing up in bulk, the platform has had a few server glitches, too, showing users a “Not Enough Resources” error. After these hiccups, the social network has been stable.

What’s more, Bluesky finally added the ability for users to post videos on the app last week. It also rolled out self-moderation tools like controlling who can quote a post, hiding a reply, and the ability to set timed mute words.

After being in an invite-only mode for almost a year, Bluesky opened its platform for all users in February. Meanwhile, Bluesky’s Meta-owned rival Threads has grown to over 200 million users.
