Barbie film ‘caused global shortage’ of pink paint

Barbie is synonymous with the colour pink, and director Greta Gerwig did not hold back on using the colour in her upcoming film based on the doll.

The set, which was shot at the Warner Bros. studios in Leavesden, Watford, was drenched in so much pink that it caused an international run on the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint.

“The world ran out of pink,” production designer Sarah Greenwood said in an interview with Architectural Digest.

The Barbie film will follow Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as they venture beyond the safety of the Barbieland borders and into the “real world”.

The film’s trailer shows a desert spring town of dollhouse-like houses with furniture, closets full of clothes and accessories, and even a slide, all coloured pink.

Gerwig told the magazine that the team chose hand-paint the set instead using CGI to ensure everything was toylike and “tactile”, and for the pinks used to be “very bright” as she did not want to “forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl”.
