EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Hollywood star Alan Cumming takes DNA test after artful discovery

When the Hollywood star Alan Cumming visited Cawdor Castle, home of Macbeth, he thought there was something familiar about the portraits on the walls.

So intrigued was the actor, who’s appeared in blockbusters such as X-Men United and TV hits including The Good Wife, that he delved into his ancestry and discovered that members of his family had worked at the Scottish castle near Nairn.

This made him wonder if his likeness to the portraits could be because one of his ancestors had had an upstairs/downstairs affair with the aristocrats who lived there.

Lady Liza Campbell, the artist and former model who’s the daughter of the 6th Earl Cawdor, reveals: ‘Every time Alan looked at our family portraits, he suspected he might be the descendant of a bit of laundry cupboard sauciness. He sure looks a lot more like them than I do.’

To find out if he did have blue blood, Cumming took a DNA test. He asked Lady Liza, a former girlfriend of Pakistan’s prime minister Imran Khan, for ‘a hank’ of her hair for the test, but she agreed to give some saliva instead.

They are now awaiting the results to see if Perthshire-born Cumming, 56, is related to the first baron, or ‘Thane’ as the Scots call their ennobled folk.

The most famous Thane of Cawdor was, of course, Shakespeare’s tragic hero Macbeth.

It would be the latest fascinating turn in the life of Lady Liza, 61, who is the last child of an Earl Cawdor to be born at Cawdor Castle. She hit the headlines after posing nude, aged 20, for society photographer Patrick Lichfield.

After going out with Khan in the Eighties, Liza went on to marry a big-game fisherman with whom she lived on a desert island.

Ian Botham is on a sticky wicket in his new role as a trade envoy to promote British business Down Under, according to Australia cricket star Ian Chappell.

The former Test captain has bowled Beefy a googly by declaring: ‘I hope the Australian authorities don’t believe everything he says.’

Chappell, 77, has feuded with Lord Botham, 65, since they met in the bar of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1977 while Beefy was still waiting for his first England call-up.

Each man claims the other was mouthing off in a drunken and offensive way — but they both agree that Botham punched or pushed Chappell backwards off his bar stool. According to Botham, he then pursued the fleeing Chappell out of the door, ‘hurdling the bonnet of a car in the chase’.

They locked horns again at the Adelaide Oval car park in 2010 before being separated by their broadcasting colleagues.

Let’s hope that Lord Beefy approaches his new role with similar enthusiasm!

Formula 1 billionaire Bernie Ecclestone’s younger daughter, Petra, is yet to wed former used car salesman Sam Palmer — but she’s already demonstrated her commitment in painful fashion.

To mark their relationship reaching its fourth anniversary this week, the 32-year-old heiress had a tattoo inked on her right hand by LA-based celebrity artist Dr Woo.

Cautiously, however, she opted not to have Sam’s name but simply the word ‘mine’.

‘The pandemic and having kids just put it back. We definitely will one day.’

Among the pals the ‘reality’ TV star, 26, was spotted cosying up to outside a nightclub in London’s West End was Michael Pearce, 29, co-founder of expensive ready-meals business Clean Kitchen, and they were later seen holding hands.

However, he insists they’re not a couple, telling me: ‘We are old friends.’

Property show goddess Kirstie Allsopp took umbrage at being dismissed as an ‘elite Baron’s daughter’ on social media.

‘If you’re going to have a go at me, don’t do it by talking about my father,’ complains the daughter of Charles Allsopp, 6th Baron Hindlip, a former chairman of Christie’s.

‘You reveal yourself to be both sexist and arcane. I am my own woman, love me or loath me, and I had a mother, too, by the way.’

That would, of course, be the late interior decorator Fiona Hindlip.

Eric Clapton was recently reunited with his estranged daughter, Ruth, 36, after they fell out for six years following her disclosure that he had turned up to his 70th birthday party dressed as Kermit the Frog.

Now, she has publicly revealed that the guitar legend was left ‘sobbing’ over the death of his old friend, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Careful, Ruth, or it could be another six years . . .

Stage and screen star Michael Sheen’s bushy beard has been voted ‘best of Wales’ two years running, but his girlfriend, Anna Lundberg, seems delighted now it’s gone.

Sheen, 52, shaved it off on her 27th birthday, and the Swedish actress, who appeared with him in BBC lockdown drama Staged, was so thrilled that she was barely able to keep her hands — and lips — off him.

Sharing a picture of his new look for the filming of TV series Good Omens, she hailed the day a ‘beardless birthday bonanza’.
