Gordon Ramsay takes apart his Costa bacon roll and calls barista an ‘idiot sandwich’

Gordon Ramsay has slammed Costa for charging £3 for ‘microwaved bacon’.

The Scotland-born celebrity chef, 54, took to TikTok to review the coffee chain’s Drive Thru, jokingly branding a barista an ‘idiot sandwich’.

While many users found the exchange hilarious, others branded him a ‘snob’ for having such high expectations for a takeaway meal.

In a series of clips, which has racked up more than 20 million views, the chef visited a local coffee shop where he ordered a British Smoked Bacon Bap.

‘Good Morning, welcome to Costa, how are you?’ a barista says over a tannoy in clip.

‘I’m good thank you. I’m Gordon, you’re Costa right?’ he replies.

He then orders the bap, before he’s asked if he wants ketchup or brown sauce with his roll.

After confirming the ketchup is Heinz and the HP sauce is on-brand he takes a sachet of each.

Gordon then asks for an extra sachet of bacon, but is told he’s ordering the final wrap.

‘It’s a good handful, a good size, a proper sized bap,’ the barista confirms.

In a second video Gordon picks up the bap, inspects it and berates the baristas for the lack bacon.

‘Jesus Christ big boy you can get half a pound of bacon down the local butchers for £1.50,’ Gordon said.

‘£3 for one rasher – and was the grill even on?’ he went on.

After the barista confirmed the wrap is pre-made and heated in a microwave oven, Gordon went on: ‘No grilling the bacon in the microwave! How many times have told you?’

He then took the bacon out of the wrap and returned it to the barista.

‘Please. I’ll take the roll, take the bacon back. Tell Mr Costa to get a grill for Christmas,’ he adds.

Gordon then leaned out of his car, and put each side of the buns by the baristas ears.

‘What are you?’ he asked.

‘An idiot sandwich,’ the barista replied through laughter.

The phrase is a reference to a sketch Gordon acted in on the Late Late show with James Corden in 2016.

In the sketch – dubbed Hell’s Cafeteria, a parody of his own show Hell’s Kitchen – Gordon holds two pieces of bread either side of TV host’s Julie Chen head and calls her an ‘idiot sandwich’.

The photo has since become viral meme, and Gordon has revealed he’s often asked by fans to reenact the scene.

Fans were quick to comment on the video, branding the bacon ‘raw’ and sharing sympathy for the barista.

‘I would be STRESSED in this situation.’ said one.

‘This is an interesting episode of Hell’s kitchen,’ joked another, while one added: ‘Gordon makes everything 10 times scarier.’

‘I was scared for them when I was him open the bun,’ commented a fourth.

Others went so far as to call Gordon a ‘snob’ and criticised the chef for behaving unreasonably given the barista ‘doesn’t make the rules’ – and expressed sympathy for the poor customers waiting behind him in the queue while he ranted.

‘Why is he so mean to people who literally don’t make the rules?’ one TikTok user asked.

Another wrote: ‘Gordon this isn’t a banquet,’ while one remarked: ‘It’s a bloody takeaway what do you expect?’
