Mark Wahlberg is consuming ‘eight meals a day at about 7,000 calories’ to gain weight for film

Mark Wahlberg has packed on 20 pounds in just three weeks as he attempts to ‘put on as much weight as possible’ for his role as a boxer-turned-priest in the upcoming film Father Stu.

And personal chef Lawrence Duran revealed that the 49-year-old actor is eating ‘eight meals a day at about 7,000 calories’ in order to achieve his extreme six-week transformation.

Lawrence, speaking to E! News on Wednesday, broke down Wahlberg’s current meat-heavy diet plan, which requires him to stop and eat ‘about every three hours.’

Before going meal-by-meal, Duran explained to the outlet that, although Mark is putting on weight, he is ‘definitely not loading him up on junk.’

Instead, he is preparing ‘relatively nutritious meals, all flavored by Spiceology,’ while consulting with both a physician and a nutritionist to make sure all the actor’s health needs are met.

‘We meet with a team of doctors who do his bloodwork and a nutritionist who gives us a full breakdown of what his body needs, what his body’s lacking and basically come up with a meal plan accordingly,’ Duran explained.

Every two weeks, Duran and Wahlberg ‘go to a specialist to see where we’re at and adjust things.’

In order to properly relay the magnitude of Wahlberg’s current food intake, Lawrence noted that the star ‘went from taking in about 2,000 calories a day, which is where he was in that first picture—all slim and ripped—eating maybe four meals a day, to eating eight meals a day at about 7,000 calories.

‘We try to hit 7,000 calories a day, but it’s not easy for anyone to take in that much food even though we’re breaking it up into smaller meals,’ he continued.

‘He’s eating about every three hours. We do good carbohydrates, dark green vegetables, and then, just switch up the protein throughout the day and, at least, a dozen eggs a day.’

In order to keep Wahlberg on track towards his 30 pounds in six-weeks weight gain, Lawrence gets the food rolling at 3 in the morning when he serves the actor his ‘pre-breakfast.’

‘So morning usually starts about 3 a.m. and his first breakfast is four eggs—that’s the pre-breakfast. Then, he does his workout and then after the workout, which is usually around 5 to 6 o’clock in the morning, we do eight eggs, six strips of bacon, a cup of rice, two tablespoons of olive oil and a protein shake.

‘It’s his protein-inspired mass weight-gainer to help build on a little more muscle as well,’ he added of the shake.

Goal: 'We try to hit 7,000 calories a day, but it's not easy for anyone to take in that much food even though we're breaking it up into smaller meals,' he continued

‘Then, three hours later, we do some kind of ground beef or ground turkey, whether it’s been made into a hamburger patty or a meatloaf, with another cup of rice.

The ground beef or turkey plate is then followed up with three hours later by Lawrence preparing ‘a roasted chicken, another cup of rice,’ while also adding ‘a cup of cooked spinach and a cup of cooked beets as well.’

Leaving chicken and turkey behind, Duran returns to the kitchen three hours later to cook up ‘either a veal chop or a pork chop’ for the Fighter star.

‘I’ll do about eight ounces of that and then a small, four-ounce piece of salmon with another cup of rice, olive oil and beets as well,’ he noted.

‘And then we’ll do another meal, which is usually eight ounces of some type of steak, eight ounces of some kind of white fish, like a sea bass or a halibut, and load up on tons of vegetables.

‘And then the nightcap, right before he goes to bed, we’ll do what we call a mash that consists of one cup of cooked steel-cut oatmeal, two tablespoons of applesauce, two tablespoons of jelly or jam, two tablespoons of almond butter and a tablespoon of molasses.

‘He has to take that down right before he goes to bed. It’s just another mass gainer to put on weight during his sleep,’ said Lawrence.

As for ‘cheat days,’ Wahlberg is allotted one cheat meal, while adhering to Lawrence’s meal plan the other ‘six days out of the week.’

‘[Mark] will have a cheat meal one day, whether it be Saturday or Sunday, where he’ll go to one of his favorite restaurants and he’ll indulge and have pastas or pizzas or cookies.

‘He’s very regimented during the week, staying on top of everything and not veering off, just because it’s so much weight in such a short period of time,’ Duran explained of the star’s ambitious goal.

As for ‘how long’ it will take for Wahlberg to drop the weight and return to his svelte physique, Duran said ‘it varies.’

‘For him, he can drop it pretty quick. Within a few weeks you’ll probably see a drastic change,’ he guessed.

The difference between Mark dropping the pounds and the average person is that Mark is very experienced in the realm of bulking and cutting.

Talking about his plans to gain weight for the role on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Boogie Nights star said he wanted to ‘eat everything in sight’ after being on a strict food regimen ‘for so long.’

‘I want to go bakeries. I want to go to Denny’s. I want to get pancakes. I want to get everything I can possibly get my hands on,’ he told Kimmel.

It is a far cry from the star’s usual keep fit regime.

In 2018, Wahlberg shocked his followers when he revealed his carefully regimented schedule.

He claimed that his ‘typical’ day began with him waking up at 2:30 am, followed by ‘prayer time’ 15 minutes later.

Much of the later morning into the afternoon and evening were devoted to his work, whether it was related to his Hollywood career or his business investments, like his Wahlburgers restaurant chain.

His family got two blocks of four hours total devoted to them, though one of the spots on the schedule was also shared with ‘meetings’ and ‘work calls.’

Some social media fans wondered if the schedule posted to Wahlberg’s Insta Stories was accurate, given its unforgiving schedule and lack of much downtime.

The role in Father Stu will be something of a return to form for Wahlberg, who scored a Best Picture nomination as a producer in 2010 for the David O. Russell film The Fighter.

Mark portrayed the titular character, boxer Micky Ward, in the movie.

Father Stu is a faith-based biopic loosely based on the late Father Stuart Long, who started off his career as a boxer and eventually became a priest.

The movie, which has been said to be close to Wahlberg’s heart for a number of years, was written and is directed by Gibson’s girlfriend Rosalind Ross.

Once he’s finished with Father Stu, Wahlberg will have to slim down or turn the 30 pounds of fat into muscle, when he takes on the title role in The Six Billion Dollar Man.
