A herd of cows was caught on camera by startled drivers as the animals stampeded down a Kent carriageway.

Footage of the bizarre encounter was recorded at around 5.30am on Tuesday on a stretch of the A2 near Coldred.

In the clip dozens of cows can be seen weaving between vehicles as part of the bovine breakout. 

Moos could be heard reverberating as the animals hurtled past drivers’ windows.

One puzzled man who recorded the encounter said from behind the camera: ‘Why are the cows out?’

Recovery driver Joe Clift, 28, who was heading to a breakdown in Dover at the time, told KentOnline: ‘I just thought “what the hell are these cows doing in the road”, it’s a weird thing to see at 5.30am.

‘I was just heading down to a breakdown and just saw them all coming towards us. I lost count of how many there were.’  

A spokesman for Kent Police told MailOnline: ‘Kent Police was called at 5.45am on Tuesday 3 August 2021 following a report that a number of cows had entered the coastbound carriageway of the A2 near Coldred.

‘Officers attended and assisted with traffic management and the removal of the animals from the road. Officers left the scene at around 6.15am.’
