Princess Diana and Duke of Edinburgh’s godson Philippos of Greece ‘marries’ wife again in Athens

Prince Philippos of Greece, the godson of Princess Diana and the Duke of Edinburgh, has married Nina Flohr, the daughter of a billionaire, in a lavish ceremony in Athens today.

The prince, 35, who is the youngest child of the last king and queen of Greece, Constantine II and Anne-Marie of Denmark, exchanged vows with Nina, daughter of Swiss businessman Thomas Flohr, for the third time.

The couple first wed last December in a small civil ceremony in St Moritz, Switzerland, followed by a high society springtime celebration in Cambridgeshire.

While both were intimate affairs – indeed there were just the two fathers as witnesses at the first – this third wedding at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens had all the makings of a full-blown extravaganza.

Their model daughter Princess Olympia, 25, and her dashing British beau Peregrine Pearson, the wealthy heir to Cowdray Park, were also in attendance.

Also part of their well-heeled set is magazine editor Violet Henderson and Princess Eugenie’s friend Caroline Rupert.

Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank were rumoured to be in attendance, with Philippos and Nina making the guestlist for their royal wedding in October 2018. Nina is also friends with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice’s husband.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s long-time carriage driving companion Lady Penelope Knatchbull is the groom’s godmother and was expected to be among the guests.

Philippos’s well-connected family means there could be representatives from almost every European monarchy at the ceremony.

His paternal aunt Queen Sofia of Spain, mother of the current King Felipe, were due to attend, according to Hola!, as well as Princess Elena of Spain, the groom’s cousin and godmother.

Another godmother and the groom’s maternal aunt, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, was invited, as has godfather Kyril, Prince of Preslav. Margrethe II of Denmark, is also a maternal aunt, and she could attend alongside her son Crown Prince Frederick and daughter-in-law Crown Princess Mary.

Although they’re not directly related, royal protocol means King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Victoria and Crown Prince Daniel of Sweden, and Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, were also expected at the cathedral on Saturday.

The couple were first married in a private ceremony in December, and were joined only by their fathers King Constantine, 80, and Thomas Flohr, 60, due to Covid-19 restrictions

Among the notable absences were godfather and cousin King Felipe of Spain and his wife, Queen Sofia, who are otherwise engaged at the annual Asturias awards.

Born in 1986 at St Mary’s Hospital in London, Philippos was raised in a 13-bedroom stately house on the edge of Hampstead Heath where Princess Diana was a frequent visitor with Prince William and Prince Harry.

He’s known to be private and largely shuns the limelight, but he’s made appearances at numerous high profile events such as the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010 and her sister Princess Madeleine in 2013.
