Argentine authorities are investigating the death of a 21-year-old rapper who was found hanging inside her apartment on Christmas Day days after she said on social media she feared for her life while being harassed by her ex.
Paula Giménez, who was known in the local hip-hop scene as Gemma, was discovered dead on Friday morning shortly after spending Christmas Eve at a friend’s late night party with her ex-boyfriend, Franco Nemith, 21.
Judge Fernando Verón and lead prosecutor Adriana Herbociani have raised doubts as to whether Giménez took her own life after viewing her social media where she revealed on December 15 she was ‘so scared what this bum can do, I’m scared.’
Six minutes later, she tweeted, ‘I never had so much f****** fear in my life.’
Giménez, the mother of a six-year-old girl, never named the person she was afraid of. But police say Nemith had been harassing and threatening her after they broke up six months earlier. Friends and family described their relationship as violent.
She also told a friend of Nemith that he had recently tried to break down her door to get into her home.
On the day of her death, the young rapper reportedly left her friend’s party at 7am with Nemith, and returned to her home in the northeast city of Posadas.
Just 20 minutes later, Nemith left and called the party host, identified only as Rodrigo, and asked him to visit Giménez’s home, telling him that ‘Paula was upset.’
Rodrigo subsequently went to the residence and discovered her dead, with a cable wrapped around her neck. He then ran out of the home to alert friends before calling 911.

An autopsy report determined the cause of death as ‘asphyxia by hanging,’ but the medical examiner’s findings did not indicate how long Giménez’s body had been dangling from the cord for.
Before her tragic death, Giménez shared a post via Instagram Stories’ close friends list stating she was ‘really scared.’
‘It is the first time in my life that I am truly afraid,’ she wrote. ‘And I post it, because I’m really scared … I put it only on [close friends] because I don’t want to make this a show. But I feel the need to publish it, because if something happens or something happens to me, let it be known that I ever put this out.’
Giménez also texted that Nemith had jumped over a fence and tried to knock down her door. But he then left after she refused to open the door. She also said she refused to seek an order of protection after he father had asked her to do so.
She lived alone at her house, and her daughter’s father had custody of their child.
Authorities in Argentina have been going over Gemma’s social media feed to see if there are any leads that will rule out that she committed suicide and instead was murdered on Christmas Day

Misiones Online reported that friends and neighbors described the former couple’s relationship as a violent at times and that Giménez reportedly blocked Nemith on social media after he sent her threatening messages, which she continued to receive via fake accounts set up by him on Instagram.
Nemith allegedly contacted Giménez and wrote: ‘You and your daughter will regret it if I see you again up close.’
Nemith was detained last Friday and was released the following day after telling investigators that she had texted him to let him know that she would ‘harm herself’ if he failed to return to her home.
Because of the alarming text message, Nemith said he instructed Rodrigo to check on her well-being.
He also told authorities that in 2019, he had informed law enforcement that Giménez had threatened to commit suicide.
No other arrests have been reported.
