Chicago Bears defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. has been charged with misdemeanor assault on a female in North Carolina for allegedly hitting a pregnant woman he was dating when she refused to have sex with him.

The alleged incident took place in a Charlotte hotel room on October 17, according to a police report obtained by the Daily Mail. The Bears played the Carolina Panthers the following day in Charlotte.

According to court records obtained by TMZ, the alleged victim said Edwards became violent when she turned down his sexual advances. The unidentified woman also said he has a history of violence.

Through his agent, the 26-year-old Edwards denied the accusation to TMZ, which was the first to report the charge.

‘Mario Edwards doesn’t condone domestic violence,’ said agent Peter Schaffer. ‘At no time did Mario Edwards do anything that raised to the level of domestic violence, or any violence.’

Schaffer acknowledged that the pair had a verbal argument at the hotel, but said his client ‘did what he’s been told’ and left the scene to ‘de-escalate the situation.’

Edwards is listed as a victim on the incident report obtained by the Daily Mail, and both he and the unidentified woman were said to have visible bruises and scratches. The other victim was treated and released from the hospital, but Edwards was not hospitalized.

‘On October 18, 2020 at 12:10, officers responded to 222 East 3rd Street in reference to a female hitting a male with her hand and scratching his forehead,’ read the incident report.

Chicago Bears spokespeople did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.

Edwards has a court date for the pending charges scheduled for March 29, 2021.

The Bears beat the Panthers on October 18 as Edwards finished with one sack and another tackle. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound former second-round pick, is on a one-year, $910,000 deal. He has over $9 million in career earnings, according to spotrac.com.

His father, Mario Sr., had a brief NFL career as well. Both father and son won a national title while playing collegiately at Florida State.
