Brooklyn mom, 32, shot dead at memorial for her friend who was executed hours earlier

A Brooklyn mom was shot to death while attending a memorial service for her friend who had been executed hours earlier after accidentally stepping on a gang member’s foot, it has been reported.

Shalimar Birkett, 32, was shot in the head Monday night as residents in the Brownsville neighborhood gathered for a vigil for Miles Bobbsemple, 31, the New York Daily News reported. The suspected gangbanger’s name was not revealed.

Birkett, a mother of two young boys, was attending Bobbsemple’s vigil around 11pm when the gunman hopped out of a car that had stopped down the block and opened fire, the outlet reported. Birkett was rushed to a local hospital where she died.

The suspected gunman reportedly believed that rival gang members were at the vigil and did not intend on shooting Birkett, cops told the Daily News.

Cops reportedly believe the man who fatally shot Birkett is the same shooter who killed Bobbsemple around 12.30am on Monday at a nearby house party when he accidentally stepped on a gang member’s foot.

Bobbsemple had been dropped off at a local hospital by a driver who took off before he died, initially leaving cops uncertain of what had led to his shooting.

However, cops believe Bobbsemple had been shot at the same party where a third victim, 30, was also shot in both legs and in the shoulder. That victim, who was not named, was taken to another area hospital in stable condition.

The New York Post reported that it was that victim who had allegedly stepped on the gang member’s footing – prompting the deadly violence.

Birkett’s mother, Patricia Hamilton, called the shooting death a ‘nightmare’ in an interview with the Daily News. She said her daughter lived with her and that was  Bobbsemple was ‘a friend, but not a close friend’ of Birkett.

‘She was an outgoing, fun person, loved by everyone — all her friends and family,’ Hamilton said.

‘Why? Why you had to come shoot and kill my daughter? She was just there.’

DailyMail.com has reached out to Hamilton for more information and additional comment.

Bobbsemple had no criminal record while Birkett had one previous arrest – which is sealed, WABC reported.

Birkett had just landed a job at a Famous Footwear before her death and Hamilton told the Daily News that it remains unclear if her two boys, ages 11 and 10, have been told that their mother had been murdered.

‘She always takes them out to eat, shopping. They go to waterparks and stuff during the summertime. They do fun things together, her and the aunts and the cousins,’ Hamilton said.

She told the Daily News that Birkett leaves behind six brothers and five sisters – while another of her siblings preceded her in death when he was also the victim of gun violence.
