A California woman was shocked to discover her Real ID featured a picture of her with a mask on it.

Lesley Pilgrim, a third-year-law student from Sacramento, received the ID with the bizarre visual on it this week.

‘My first reaction was, I was concerned,’ Pilgrim said to WESH. ‘This can’t be legal identification. There’s no way if I give this to a police officer or TSA agent, they won’t arrest me.’

Pilgrim shared that she did have photos taken with her mask both on and off after spending three hours waiting to be seen at the Laguna Beach DMV.

‘I thought it was a crisis averted,’ she added.

Anita Gore, a spokesperson for the DMV, said that there was ‘some miscommunication at some level.’

‘We’ve gone over the protocols with our employees so they now know, you know, double-check,’ Gore added.

California has issued approximately 9.6million Real IDs so far, Gore said, estimating that there would be 6million more issued by the Oct. 1 deadline. She explained that this was the first occurrence of a bad photo being issued.

The Sacramento DMV has reached out to Pilgrim to arrange for her to redo the shot for free.

‘It was kind of shocking, concerning, and ultimately, funny,’ said Pilgrim. ‘The DMV office I went to, everyone was so polite, so patient, they are all working so hard, they are providing an essential service, so I’m really grateful for them. This was clearly just a mistake.’

Real ID has been brought in to standardize security features on state-issued driver’s licenses.

People who wish to use a driver’s licence to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings will be required to update their licence to a Real ID. Otherwise people can continue using their passports.
