The Hispanic woman, 45, was killed at the store on Whittwood Lane in Whittier at around 5.30pm Tuesday.

The victim was checking out at a cashier’s station when she got into an argument with the gunman, witnesses said.

Zena Meras, mother of a 17-year-old employee who saw the attack, told ABC7: ‘She heard them arguing.

‘And she saw him shoot and heard the shot and this guy ran out.

‘Supposedly he said to the little boy “I just shot your mom and now I’m leaving”. And he just took off out of the door.’

Robert Alarcon was shoe-shopping for his child in the store at the time of the shooting.

He told KTLA5: ‘It was so loud the floor vibrated and at first I’m like maybe someone is doing construction and then next thing you know the lady from Kohl’s, she just yells out, “Run, run, run”.’

Officer Figueroa said: ‘It was chaos, from what I understand.

‘A lot of people were in panic mode after they heard the gunshot, and saw the victim down on the ground.’

Police said they believe the attack was targeted and the suspect with a shaved head, wearing a blue shirt and jeans is still on the loose after fleeing in what is believed to be a silver Nissan.

Whittier Police said: ‘We have a large police presence at the Whitwood Town Center after receiving reports of shots fired.

‘One gunshot victim has been located. The investigation is ongoing. Please stay away from the area.’
