‘I’m crying laughing’: EPIC Costco cake fail becomes a viral sensation thanks to the decorator’s VERY literal take on a customer’s detailed directions
- Photos of the original order and the end result were shared on Reddit
- The person drew a sketch of what they wanted the cake to look like
- The cake decorator ended up drawing the actual diagram in red icing
A Costco customer who ordered a cake from the wholesale chain learned the hard way that even the most detailed instructions can be misconstrued.
The unknown person asked for a half-sheet of white cake with nothing but red frosting on the top and bottom of the perimeter — a seemingly simple request.
They stressed that they didn’t want any design or lettering on the cake by crossing out both sections on the order form and writing ‘none’ across both.

Photos of the original bakery order and the hilarious end result were reposted on Reddit’s r/mildlyInfuriating forum this week
‘Please see back,’ they added at the bottom.
The customer even highlighted their note to check the other side of the form in yellow to make sure it wouldn’t be missed.
‘No writing/no designs. Only request red frosting on perimeter for the top/bottom,’ they explained, adding a sketch of what the completed cake should look like for good measure.
However, the order went awry when the decorator took the diagram literally and drew it in red and black icing on the front of the cake.
And, no, there wasn’t any red icing on the perimeter.
The pickup date was listed as Saturday, April 1, leading some to believe that the cake was an April Fools’ Day prank.
‘Costco will give you exactly what you know you didn’t need,’ the Reddit user joked, later sharing in the comments that they weren’t the original poster.
Many people were thoroughly amused by the cake decorator’s mistake and shared their delight in the comments.

‘I’m crying laugh,’ one person wrote. ‘I’d lose my mind if this happened to me.’
‘The good news is they did read both pages of instructions,’ someone else added.
Others pointed out that the rendering of the sketch is actually quite impressive.
‘I love how the upper left corner is a little off just like in the picture. Took some effort,’ one fan pointed out.
‘I like to imagine the first cake had a perfect rectangle. Then someone came by and said, hey this doesn’t look like the picture,’ someone else shared.
‘I’m speechless honestly,’ another added. ‘I mean, they even drew all the unevenness of the drawing. Incredible.’
