Florida woman choked to death by man devastated by the end of his relationship with her roommate

An illegal immigrant has been arrested for the murder of a Florida woman and for keeping her roommate hostage on Thanksgiving.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced yesterday that Roberto De Lira, 45, faces first-degree murder and attempted murder charges after the body of a woman was discovered in her home in Pompano Beach, Florida, the Miami Herald reports.

He is accused of entering the home of two women on November 26, killing Nadir Verissimo, 51, and keeping her roommate, who currently remains unidentified, hostage.

The Sheriff’s Office said De Lira knew the victims but did not provide further details as to the relationship between them.

One of Nadir’s friends told AcheiUSA that Roberto had refused to accent his relationship with her roommate had come to an end.

The Brazilian suspect has had an immigration hold since November 27.

Nadir Verissimo, 51, was found dead in her home in Pompano Beach, Florida on November 26 by her roommate, who is currently unidentified

Sources told AcheiUSA that Verissimo’s roommate rented a room at her property with De Lira but he was supposedly asked to leave when he threatened to kill his partner.

The source also claimed De Lira was ‘very possessive’ and suggested he waited inside for her to be alone and then ‘choked her’.

As the last to see people to see Verissimo alive, the unnamed roommate is a victim and a witness in the case

She left the house at around 11pm on Wednesday, November 25, and when she returned at around 1am she discovered an intruder was inside.

There De Lira, of Deerfield Beach, is said to have battered, choked and held her hostage before leaving at 2am.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed the roommate had fallen asleep and when she woke up she realized De Lira, who is a Jiu-Jitsu fighter, had killed Verissimo and she called the police.

Officers found Verissimo ‘unconscious and not breathing’ and declared her dead.

De Lira was arrested later the same day and is being held in Broward’s Main Jail without a bond, Local10.com reports.

‘Nadir was not only a friend but I considered her a sister as well. We lived, laughed and played together.

Nadir was a happy person, sweet and always smiling! She loved her job,’ she said.

I love you Nadir. Your kind heart, sweetness and affection were an example to us all. You were a great friend, amazing daughter and a beautiful sister.’
