A Georgia couple is going viral after the husband bought his wife a new engagement ring 14 years after they got engaged.
Christopher and Candace Smith have been married since 2007, and for some of that time, Candace has worn a $20 fake diamond that she bought for herself at Macy’s — until last month, when Christopher present with a new bit of bling.
Now their photos have gone viral with messages of commitment and not putting too much stock in fancy jewelry — but the couple says that their story is a bit different than what social media users have made it out to be.
Lasting love: A Georgia couple is going viral after the husband bought his wife a new engagement ring 14 years after they got engaged
Faux bling: Christopher and Candace Smith have been married since 2007, and for some of that time, Candace has worn a $20 fake diamond that she bought for herself at Macy’s
Loving it: Christopher just bought Candace a new (real) ring and shared her reaction on line — which has gone viral
Just after Thanksgiving, Christopher got his wife a new engagement ring and shared photos of her excited reaction on social media.
‘My wife been thuggin it with the Macy’s ring for $20,’ he captioned a photo of the ring she used to wear, which was dull and discolored.
‘She deserve it all. She finally has a ring,’ he added to a photo of her smiling with her new, nicer ring.
Though Christopher shared the story for their friends and family, the images soon went viral — and people they didn’t even know were paying attention.
One of those people was Norinzo Haynes from Jacksonville, Florida, who shared the photos on Facebook with a message praising the couple — but getting their story all wrong.
Carried away: But after a stranger shared their story, people got the wrong idea, calling Christopher a ‘bum’ for not getting his wife a real ring until now
The real story: Christopher did get Candace a real ring years ago, but it was too small after she had babies, so she wore it around her neck
‘I saw this post and it really blessed me. This lady accepted the $20 ring and the relationship lasted long enough for him to get her the ring she deserved and always wanted her to have,’ Norinzo wrote.
‘This is the difference between proof love and true love! True love will ALWAYS outlast proof love! Proof love needs a big ring, a big wedding, an exotic honeymoon… all true love needs is the person they are committing to.’
While many of the commenters praised the couple, some accused Christopher of not having his life together.
‘No man should ever get praise from living off a woman while making children in the process,’ one criticized.
But according to Christopher and Candace, that’s not the case.
Worth the wait: But after Candace dropped some hints about wanting to upgrade, her husband decided to buy her a new piece this yea
‘It was close to the holidays and she doesn’t really ask too much, and I got her the ring,’ he said
Speaking to MyFox8, Christopher explained that he did, actually, buy a real ring for his wife when they got engaged — but somewhere in the midst of having five kids, her finger got bigger and she outgrew it.
‘I got pregnant and it had got too small,’ she said.
‘That ring got too small, so she went and purchased a $20 ring. And she wore that ring for a while,’ he said.
In fact, Candace still wears that original ring around her neck, and only purchased the $20 ring for herself because she ‘got tired of her finger being naked.’
But after Candace dropped some hints about wanting to upgrade, her husband decided to buy her a new piece this year.
Candace added: ‘I’m willing to make a sacrifice to build generational wealth for our children. I just had to be patient, and it paid out.’
‘It was close to the holidays and she doesn’t really ask too much, and I got her the ring,’ he said.
But because of the misunderstanding, Christopher said he still has rude messages from strangers.
‘I had people inboxing me, calling me a bum for her wearing a $20 ring. It was a lot of nasty — it’s still a lot of nasty comments on there,’ he said.
Online drama aside, the pair seem quite happy — and Candace insists she was perfectly happy waiting as long as she did for a new ring.
‘We did what we could,’ she said, explaining that they met when he was 21 and she was 24. ‘I’m willing to make a sacrifice to build generational wealth for our children. I just had to be patient, and it paid out.’
