Husband of Instagram influencer, 26, whose naked body was found on side of road denies abusing her

The husband of a 26-year-old Instagram influencer whose naked body was found by the side of a Houston road last week said he has received death threats and pledged he was ‘not a jerk’ amid allegations he abused her.

Tom Sharkey, 49, told KTRK-TV on Tuesday that his wife of less than a year, Alexis Sharkey was not the outgoing, bubbly person that she appeared to be on social media.

Alexis was found dead on Saturday by Houston city workers with no visible signs of injury on her body. She had been missing since Friday.

A Houston Police Department spokesperson told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy that they expect will shed more light on how Alexis died.

On social media, Tom, who paid tribute to his wife on social media by calling her ‘the most amazing woman,’has been accused of killing Alexis, which he denies. He also says that claims the couple was going through a divorce are false.

‘She wasn’t happy. She was stressed,’ he told KTRK-TV on Tuesday.

‘I would cuddle her to try to make her strong. She was an amazing woman.

‘Sir, my wife was an amazing woman. She really was. There’s always other sides to everything.

‘I was the one holding her, cuddling her, and building her back up.’

Tom added: ‘I don’t need to set the record straight. I’ll let it play out the way it is.

‘I know what my life was with my wife.’

Alexis’ mother, Stacey Clark Robinault, said her daughter ‘had an argument’ shortly before she went missing but it is not clear who with.

Tom denied that he argued with his wife the last time they saw each other. He said that just before she disappeared, he urged his wife not to leave their home as she was ‘under the influence,’ though he did not elaborate.

‘We didn’t fight when she left,’ he said.

‘I just told her she couldn’t drive under the influence. She left anyhow.

‘This is where we’re at.’

Tom said that he went to identify his wife’s body at the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday.

He said he has been cooperating with law enforcement officials, turning over all of his wife’s messages, emails, and phone calls.

Tom expressed confidence that HPD is ‘going to find everyone that was involved.’

The intense media scrutiny of the case has led people on social media to speculate that Tom was involved in his wife’s death, which he has denied.

‘It’s horrible,’ he said. ‘People are talking tons of crap. I’m getting death threats and stuff.

The couple got married in December last year and moved to Houston in January. Tom paid tribute, writing: 'Never seen or felt such beauty! You are my world! You made life so incredible! Made sense of my existence! My purpose! And showed me how to truly love!'

‘None of that bothers me. What bothers me is that the world and everybody in it focuses on all of the stuff that doesn’t matter … [they] should have been focused on finding my wife.’

Tom added: ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m not a jerk.’

‘I’m just destroyed.’

Alexis’ disappearance and death have prompted family members, including her mother, to suspect that she was murdered.

Friends of Alexis have also said that the couple was going through a divorce and that Tom was physically and emotionally abusive toward her.

Last month, Tom ‘had been putting hands on her’ during a trip to Marfa, Texas, last month, a friend of Alexis told The Daily Beast.

‘Throughout the trip, he was sending really awful, nasty messages to her,’ the friend said.

‘But one night when she and I were talking alone she said, “He strangles me and chokes me out and I blackout and wake up on the bathroom floor every single time”.’

Two other friends also told The Daily Beast that Alexis complained that her husband hit her and was ‘controlling and manipulative.’

Alexis’ friends said that her behavior changed recently as she was posting less on social media. They also said she wanted to be around her friends more often so as to ‘avoid going home.’

‘I know they were going through some things,’ one of Alexis’ friends, Kendra Martin, told The Daily Beast.

‘She had mentioned being separated even though they were still living in the same apartment.

‘I actually pulled her aside two weeks ago to let her know I’m here for her, and that I know something is going on because her demeanor had changed over the last month.’

The turmoil in her marriage was one reason Alexis spent Thanksgiving with her friend, Tanya Ricardo, who said that she had a great time with her family playing board games and laughing.

Ricardo told KHOU-TV that ‘divorce was being filed’.

She said: ‘Recently, she opened up to us about it and divorce was being filed. She was a very private person. She didn’t share a lot about what was going on at home.’

Another friend told ABC13 Alexis had said she was ‘petrified’ in the weeks before her death, adding: ‘This girl is scared for her life.’ It is not known why she may have been scared.

Alexis’ family continues to harbor suspicions.

Her mother told Click2Houston her death ‘is absolutely foul play’, adding: ‘There is nothing to me that suggests that this was an accident.’

Robinault said: ‘The way in which she was found, my child would never do that to herself.

‘And there’s nothing to me that suggests anything else, other than that this was done to her. And I believe that in my mother’s gut.’

She told ABC13: ‘I do believe she was murdered.’

Alexis’ body was found just three miles from friend Tanya Ricardo’s home. The last time they spoke was Friday evening; they had plans to watch movies Saturday.

Tanya said: ‘I mean, just threw her on the side of the road, naked, like garbage. I just, I don’t get it. No one gets away with something like this. No one.

‘I don’t know who could have done something like this to her. Whoever did this, we’re going to find them. We’re going to do everything it takes. So, everyone can put her to rest in peace.’

Alexis, who had more than 21,000 followers on Instagram, regularly shared updates about her life, most recently a trip to Mexico.
