JFK and Jackie O’s grandchildren Rose and Jack Schlossberg take a dip at Martha’s Vineyard estate

Two of President John F. Kennedy’s grandchildren are soaking up the last days of summer at the family’s Martha’s Vineyard estate.

Rose, 33, and Jack Schlossberg, 28, were pictured taking a dip at Kennedy Red Gate Farm in Massachusetts on Friday, she in a pastel two-piece and he in shorts and a long-sleeve gray shirt.

Rose and Jack are two of JFK and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ three grandchildren, the son and daughter of their Caroline Kennedy and designer and author Edwin Schlossberg.

Red Gate Farm originally belonged to their grandmother, Jackie Kennedy, who hired architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen to build it in 1979 after the death of Aristotle Onassis.

‘She wanted it to look like Nantucket. Nantucket is filled with nineteenth-century architecture, so she wanted a modern house that looked like a nineteenth-century house,’ Jacobsen told The Georgetown Dish in 2019.

The town wanted ‘everything to have shingles and be built like little saltboxes with one story in the front and two in the back. I followed these rules laid out by the board so we could get the building permit. They don’t like modern architecture up there and that’s what I am…. So, I did, made a plan, and I did it about nine times before it passed that board.’

They ended up with a main house measuring 3,000 square feet, with gardens by Bunny Mellon, the landscape designer who also created the White House Rose Garden.

It sits on a 340-acre property with freshwater ponds, heath, and wetlands.

‘It was a perfect expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit,’ Caroline said of her mother, according to Christie’s. ‘She loved the old stone walls, the blue heron that lived in the pond behind the dunes, the clay cliffs, the Wampanoag legends.

‘My mother had grown up spending summers in East Hampton, New York, and Newport, Rhode Island, with her parents and grandparents,’ she went on.

‘She loved exploring the Cape, sailing Nantucket Sound with my father, and being part of all the family activities and plans at Hyannis Port [home of the Kennedy Compound]. But when my brother and I were grown she wanted a place of her own, and she found Red Gate Farm.;

 The family recently sold all but 95 acres of land to two nonprofits who will turn it into conservation land open to the public

Last year, most of the estate was sold to two nonprofits, Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission and the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, which will turn it into conservation land open to the public.

They paid $27 million for the land, which had been put on the market for $65 million a year earlier.

But Rose, Jack, and the rest of the family won’t be without a home on the island: They’re keeping 95 acres, including the houses.

‘Our family has endeavored to be worthy stewards of this magnificent and fragile natural habitat, and its sites of cultural significance,’ Caroline Kennedy said in a statement, according to the Providence Journal

‘We are excited to partner with two outstanding island organizations, and for the entire island community and the general public to experience its beauty.’
