John Mulaney branded ‘intense’ as he returns to stand-up after completing rehab… and filing for divorce from Anna Marie Tendler
John Mulaney was branded ‘intense’ as he returned to the stand-up stage just months after completing a 60-day rehab stint for cocaine and alcohol addiction.
Mulaney, 38, appeared on stage Monday for night one of his sold-out series, John Mulaney: From Scratch, at City Winery in Manhattan, where he spent a majority of the set ‘processing his intervention and rehab experience,’ according to Rolling Stone TV critic David Fear.
The series marks Mulaney’s first stand-up show since completing his rehab stint earlier this year. News of his divorce from wife Anna Marie Tendler also broke the same day of his set.

‘So John Mulaney at City Winery was…intense,’ tweeted David. ’90 mins that was mostly processing his intervention and rehab experience. Remarkably raw, vulnerable, personal. ‘When I’m alone, I realize I’m with the person who tried to kill me.’ Hilarious, harrowing, brave, historic.’
Money writer Julia Glum also spoke highly of the set, tweeting ’10/10 would see again.’
‘Just left John Mulaney’s first post-rehab show at City Winery. I don’t know much about comedy, but imho he did a great job… an excellent mix of humor and honesty. I’m rooting for u, dude,’ she wrote.
‘I’m going to be really interested to see what gets written about this show tomorrow, but I certainly laughed and gasped “oh nooo, John!” out loud several times,’ she added.

Mulaney checked himself into a 60-day rehab program for cocaine and alcohol addiction in December. He has been in outpatient sober care for the last three months, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Mulaney has been candid about his struggles with alcohol in his comedy.
‘I don’t drink. I used to drink and then I drank too much and I had to stop. That surprises a lot of audiences because I don’t look like someone who used to do anything,’ he said in his 2012 comedy special, New In Town.

‘I quit drinking because I used to drink too much and then I would black out and I would “ruin parties.”‘
The pandemic proved to be difficult for the comedian as well.
‘His fans know he’s struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly,’ a source previously told Page Six. ‘Unfortunately, he has struggled again during the pandemic.’
On top of his sobriety issues, Mulaney recently filed for divorce from Tendler, his wife of seven years.
‘I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,’ Tendler said through a spokesperson. ‘I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.’
A rep for Mulaney confirmed the divorce to Page Six: ‘John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.’
