Jill Duggar and her husband Derick Dillard have been vocal in the past year about a growing rift between them and Jill’s family, admitting they’re ‘not on the best terms’ and have had some ‘disagreements’ — but for the most part, the rest of her family has kept quiet about the falling out.
But now, Jill’s younger sister Joy Anna appears to have confirmed that there is some drama between them.
Last week, Joy Anna, 23, liked an Instagram post from a fan account that criticized Jill, 29, and accused her of ‘burning bridges’ and ‘not [behaving] very Christian’ for airing the family’s ‘dirty laundry.’
Meow! Joy Anna Duggar recently liked a fan’s Instagram post saying that was critical of her big sister Jill
Judgmental: The critique, submitted by a fan, accused Jill of ‘burning bridges’ and ‘not very Christian’ behavior for airing the family’s ‘dirty laundry’
Feud: Jill and her husband Derick Dillard have been vocal about a growing rift between them and Jill’s family, admitting they’re ‘not on the best terms’ and have had some ‘disagreements’
The criticism was posted on the Instagram account @duggarbates_confessions, where fans share their thoughts on the Duggar and Bates families.
One fan submitted a critique of Jill, who has been absent from many family gatherings in the past couple of years and has shared with fans that she is experiencing ‘distancing’ with her family.
‘I realize Jill Duggar needs to distance herself from her family for mental health reasons, but I don’t understand why they need to make their issues with the family public,’ the fan wrote.
‘Speaking out against them publicly will burn more bridges between them. They say they want to repair their relationship one day, but their actions don’t reflect that.
‘If I have an issue with my family, I deal with it privately. And I certainly don’t bank on it by going to media outlets and YouTube to air out the dirty laundry.
‘It’s not very Christian if you ask me. I get the sense that Jill and Derick need money, and this is an easy route to get that money.’
Surprising: Joy Anna doesn’t make a habit of liking posts from the account and doesn’t even appear to follow it
Sister problems? The singular like was noticed by a Reddit user this week, and has led other Redditors to speculate about how much of a rift there is between Jill and Joy Anna
Grown apart: In October, Jill admitted in a YouTube video that there’d been some ‘distancing’ between her and some of the other Duggars
The post has earned a couple hundred likes, including one from Joy Anna.
Joy Anna doesn’t make a habit of liking posts from the account, and hasn’t like any of the other 400 or so posts uploaded since January 1. In fact, she doesn’t even appear to follow the account.
The singular like was noticed by a Reddit user this week, and has led other Redditors to speculate about how much of a rift there is between Jill and Joy Anna.
‘The irony of publicly liking a post that your sister airs too much dirty laundry,’ wrote one.
‘Liking that post seems pretty petty, not very Christian either right Joy?’ commented another.
A third wrote: ‘Well I think it’s safe to say that Joy is one of the siblings that Jill was talking about when she said some of them don’t support her current choices. Very sad considering how close they were.’
In October, Jill admitted in a YouTube video that there’d been some ‘distancing’ between her and her family, explaining: ‘We’re not on the best terms with some of my family. We’ve had some disagreements and stuff, but we’re working towards healing, definitely, and restoration, but we’re having to kind of just take some time and heal.’
No problem with this one! Jill and Jessa, 28, both shared photos of time they spent together, offering a clue that Jessa was one of the supportive siblings
In another video, she said: ‘Are [my family] supportive? Not always. Everyone’s gonna have their opinion about different things. Some of my siblings are probably more likely to have something to say about it than others. Some are more like, “Hey, I’m happy for whatever y’all are deciding.”
This left fans wondering which siblings were more supportive and which weren’t.
At the time, Jill and Jessa, 28, both shared photos of time they spent together, offering a clue that Jessa was one of the supportive siblings.
From Joy Anna’s Instagram activity, Duggar-watchers are convinced that she is one of the siblings who is ‘probably more likely to have something to say.’
This is particularly sad given how close Jill and Joy Anna always were.
To help raise and keep an eye on all of her 19 children, the girls’ mom Michelle set up a ‘buddy system’ in the household, wherein each of the oldest girls had several ‘buddies’ to watch among the younger children.
Joy Anna was Jill’s oldest buddy, and was moved to tears when Jill got married and moved out of the house.
In 2019, when Joy Anna suffered a miscarriage at 20 weeks, Jill was the only one of her siblings to join her at the hospital.
Jill was also at Joy Anna’s baby shower last summer.

Gang’s… not quite all here! The Duggars celebrated Christmas together at Jim Bob and Michelle’s house, and fans noticed Jill wasn’t there
Fan comments: When a fan accused the family of ostracizing Jill, Jessa replied on YouTube that they were not — and that Jill and Derick were, in fact, invited
As a whole, the Duggars have been extremely quiet about the family drama, with Jill and Derick being the only ones to regularly speak out.
The only other sibling to address it at all was Jessa, who in December responded to a commenter who accused the family of ostracizing Jill by not inviting her to their Christmas celebrations.
‘Nobody is ostracized. The Dillard[s] were invited, but chose to celebrate the holiday with Derick’s family,’ Jessa wrote.
Parents Jim Bob and Michelle also released a statement in October that read: ‘Every family has differences of opinion and perspective at times, but families work things out. We all love Jill, Derick, and their boys very much. It is our prayer that our relationship is healed and fully restored quickly!’
Meanwhile, Jill and Derick have continued to open up to fans about family issues.
In the past several years, Jill has turned away from several of her parents’ teachings. While still a conservative Christian, she has adopted her own modesty standards of dress, choosing to wear pants, shorts, and swimsuits.
Different: Jill has turned away from some of her parents’ teachings and enrolled her oldest son, Israel, in public school, despite following a Christian homeschool curriculum herself
Freedom! While still a conservative Christian, she has adopted her own modesty standards of dress and drinks alcohol in moderation
She also enrolled her oldest son, Israel, in public school, despite following a Christian homeschool curriculum herself. She speaks openly about sex, has admitted to using birth control, and drinks alcohol in moderation.
Some of these things appear to be the decisions that some family members aren’t supportive of.
She and Derick also stopped filming for the family’s reality show, Counting On, and Jill told People that the choice ‘didn’t go over very well with anyone,’ but she ‘never expected’ it to ‘get to this point.’
Derick has even revealed that Jill is not allowed to go to the main Duggar house without Jim Bob’s permission, and had to ask him first before attending Jessa’s home birth with Ivy Jane in 2019.
But perhaps the most controversial behavior is Derick’s habit of responding to Instagram commenters with remarks about Jim Bob.
‘[The TV show is] still under his control. And he will attack the victims if they threaten his show,’ Derick wrote last summer, referring to the victims of oldest brother Josh, 32.
The rules: Derick revealed that they’re not allowed at the house when Jim Bob isn’t there, and Jill needed permission from him to come over and assist in her sister Jessa’s birth in May 2019
Threatened: Responding to questions and comments, Derick said that Jill’s father Jim Bob ‘will attack the victims’ of sex pest Josh ‘if they threaten his show’
Damning: Derick even compared Jim Bob to Jeffrey Epstein, saying that the latter ‘showed us that if you have enough money, power, and influence, you can get away with anything’
Values: When a viewer asked where ‘being Jesus followers’ compared to money and ratings, Derick noted that it’s ‘not very high’ on the list of priorities
‘We were humiliated and threatened when we first tried to not film,’ he added. ‘Now it’s not dependent on us anymore to keep the show going because more kids got married, so it’s more OK if we quit.
‘We have to break this culture, that cares more about money and ratings than protecting the most vulnerable,’ he added.
‘Jeff Epstein already showed us that if you have enough money, power, and influence, you can get away with anything. Sadly, it doesn’t stop with him. There are many more stories in this world that are not too different, existing in a culture where it can still thrive.’
When a commenter responded asking where ‘being Jesus followers or good parents land’ in Jim Bob’s priorities, Derick said: ‘Not very high, apparently.’
