A 43-year-old man is facing fierce backlash after revealing he told his girlfriend she should ‘not smile quite so broadly’ because of her ‘bad case of TMJ.’

He shared his story on Reddit‘s ‘Am I the A**hole‘ thread, explaining that he’s worried about how his 34-year-old partner’s lopsided grin will look in their engagement photos.

‘She’s a really pretty woman, but she does have a slight flaw to her physical appearance,’ he wrote. ‘She has a bad case of TMJ.’

Say what? A 43-year-old man is facing backlash on Reddit for telling his girlfriend to change her smile because she has a ‘bad case of TMJ’

TMJ is an initialism for the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull.

Problems with the jaw and the facial muscles that control the area are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD),’ according to WebMD, but they are often incorrectly referred to as TMJ.

The man said his girlfriend’s disorder ‘makes it so that when she gives a big smile one side of her mouth curls up into a huge grin while the other side basically stays still.’

‘Every selfie we’ve taken together has her looking like this,’ he added.  ‘While I absolutely accept that this is just a condition she has I wish she would do what she can to make it less noticeable.’

The Reddit user explained that he met his girlfriend online a few months ago and they recently started talking about getting engaged to the delight of their parents.

How dare you!  Critics took to the comments to call out the man for making his girlfriend feel self-conscious about her smile

How dare you!  Critics took to the comments to call out the man for making his girlfriend feel self-conscious about her smile

‘When the subject of engagement photos came up I told her that she should not smile quite so broadly so as to let her true, natural beauty shine through,’ he admitted.

‘She got really, really angry at this and said that the curled up lip on one side is her natural beauty, since it’s her. She said that she isn’t even sure if marrying me is a good idea.’

His 71-year-old father told him that ‘it was no wonder that none of [his] relationships have worked out through all these years.’ He advised him to apologize and beg for her forgiveness.

The man explained that he is the youngest of four kids in the family and the only boy, which may be why his mother was more willing to excuse his behavior.

His 67-year-old mother told him he ‘should have been nicer but that she understands.’

Too far: Many agreed that he was lying when he claimed he wanted his girlfriend change her lopsided grin for her 'sake'

‘I know all of this sounds bad but I just really want her to be at her best,’ he insisted. ‘That’s not for my sake, but for her’s.’

Many Reddit users were appalled by his actions and called him a ‘liar’ for claiming he asked his girlfriend to change her smile for her ‘sake.’

‘It actually sounds like she likes it,’ one person wrote. ‘You are the one who is EMBARRASSED. What would be best for her sake is if she didn’t marry you because you put perfect photos ahead of her happiness.’

‘There are good medical reasons to fix TMJ, but a smile is not one of them,’ another commented.

‘I wouldn’t do an open-mouth smile for years growing up because I was embarrassed of my crooked teeth,’ someone else admitted. ‘I got over it. ‘Then my first serious boyfriend told me he’d almost decided not to ask me out because he was embarrassed of them.

‘He was 18 and stupid. What’s your excuse, OP?’
