Nancy Pelosi brands Amy Coney Barrett an ‘illegitimate Supreme Court Justice’ who will ‘dismantle the Affordable Care Act’

  • Pelosi has staunchly opposed Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court
  • Her attacks on the newly-installed Justice have centered primarily around healthcare
  • The House Speaker believes Republicans have deliberately appointed a Justice who will dismantle the Affordable Care Act
  • Next week, the Supreme Court  is scheduled to hear oral arguments in a case that could overturn part or all of the ACA
  • The Senate voted 48-52 to confirm Barrett to the Court; no Democrats voted in her favor

Nancy Pelosi has ramped up her attack on Amy Coney Barrett, describing the newly-installed Supreme Court Justice as ‘illegitimate’.

The House Speaker made the incendiary remark on Tuesday, as millions of Americans headed to the polls.

‘The president is installing an illegitimate Supreme Court justice just one week before the election, after 60 million Americans have voted,’ Pelosi stated.

‘[She] will dismantle the Affordable Care Act, and won’t say, either way, when asked, by Senator Feinstein “Do you think Medicare is constitutional?” She said she really couldn’t say.’

Barrett was sworn in last Monday following a confirmation process that was clouded in controversy.

The Senate confirmed Barrett in a 48- 52 vote that went almost exclusively along party lines. Republican Susan Collins was the only Senator to break from her party, saying she could not vote to confirm Barrett so close to Election Day.

All Democrats voted against Barrett joining the Court, with their reservations centered around her previous remarks about the Affordable Care Act.

Next week, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in a case that could overturn part or all of that Act.

Pelosi has previously claimed that Barrett was deliberately picked by Trump so that Republicans can ‘can achieve their years-long campaign to destroy Americans’ health care’.

Democrats fear the Court is now also in a position to roll back legislation on women’s reproductive rights and gay marriage.

Last week, the Speaker told The Huffington Post that she does ‘not trust the Supreme Court one bit’.

‘Even the court cases they have decided in our favor, they said they will revisit, and it’s just appalling.’

On Tuesday evening, just hours after her latest attack on Barrett, Pelosi confirmed that Democrats had won control of the House for another term.

However, the Presidency remains too close to call, with Trump vowing to take a potential challenge to the Supreme Court.

Pelosi has previously stated that Barrett should recuse herself from any case relating to the election, given that Trump ‘rushed through’ her nomination.

‘He cheapened the Supreme Court,’ Pelosi blasted last month.

‘It’s almost impossible to cheapen himself any further, but nonetheless, he reinforced that.
