The mayor of North Las Vegas has ditched the Democratic Party, accusing them of deserting work-class Americans and becoming the party of the ‘elitists’.

John Lee, 65, who has been a Democrat since his first state election victory in 1994, said he was switching allegiance to the Republican Party as he can no longer abide the direction his former party is going.

Lee told Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning that the Nevada Democratic leadership was now dominated by ‘card-carrying’ socialists.

‘In the Democratic Party of Nevada, they had an election recently for leadership, and four of the five people were card-carrying members of the socialistic (sic) party,’ Lee said.

‘It’s not the party that I grew up with 25 years ago in this environment and it’s not the party that I can stand with anymore.’

He said working class Americans had been left behind by President Joe Biden’s agenda, which has included passing a $1.9 trillion stimulus package giving every American $1400.

‘The working class, the working men and women of this country and also the small business owners are not a part of the conversation anymore,’ Lee said in the interview.

‘It all has to do with the elitists and it has to do with the socialists. That is not the agenda that I have in mind for this country or the future.’

Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy asked Lee what people out West thought of President Joe Biden turning the Federal Government into a ‘gigantic jobs program’.

‘We’ve had issues out in the West here with COVID, and the tourism, hospitality and gaming industry,’ said Lee, a father of seven and Mormon who has been mayor of the city since 2013.

‘But we are not for expanding the government to even bigger and more intrusive into our lives. That is not what we want out West, and we’re not going to accept it anymore.’

Posting afterwards on Facebook, Lee said: ‘Today, I switched political parties. The Democratic Party is broken. It’s time to bring people together to get things done. It’s time to stop shouting and start solving problems.’

He later posted video to social media of his change of party allegiance.

North Las Vegas, situated 9 miles northeast of the famous Las Vegas Strip,  has a population of about 250,000 people.

Nevada was a Republican stronghold before 1992. Since then, Democrats have won the state five out of seven Presidential elections, including the last three.
