NYC supermarket employee, 39, is crushed to death by a freight elevator and horrified co-workers discover her body in the store’s cellar

  • Tragedy occurred at Food Emporium on 43rd St in Hell’s Kitchen on Tuesday afternoon 
  • Female employee, 39, was loading up a freight elevator in store’s cellar when it malfunctioned and lurched up toward first floor
  • The elevator smacked the woman in the head, leaving her with severe injuries
  • Co-workers discovered her just after 4 pm, and she was pronounced dead on the scene; the Department of Buildings have commenced an  investigation 

A New York City supermarket employee has been crushed to death by a freight elevator while on the job. 

The 39-year-old woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, died Tuesday afternoon in the cellar of the Hell’s Kitchen Food Emporium on 43rd Street. 

According to police and officials from the New York City Department of Buildings, the woman was working to load the small elevator with supplies when it malfunctioned and lurched upwards, smacking her in the head.  

Co-workers discovered her body in the cellar shortly after 4 pm. 

Medics rushed to the store, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The employee’s body was loaded onto a stretcher and taken out of the store in front of horrified onlookers.

At the time, the area was teeming with crowds trying to stock up on food ahead of an impending snow storm. 

‘I came here, then saw the gurney roll into Food Emporium and my heart stopped,” one local told The New York Post. 

The name of the victim will be released once her family has been notified. 

The Department of Buildings has opened an investigation into the tragic incident. 

It is not the first time a supermarket employee has been killed by a malfunctioning elevator. 

Earlier this year, a teenager was killed inside a Malaysian supermarket after his neck became stuck between the doors of a loading bay elevator.

Back in 2018,  62-year-old delivery man was crushed and killed by a makeshift hoist at a supermarket in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
