Universal TV president Erin Underhill told Variety in a statement on Monday: ‘[Schur’s] talent, his love for baseball, and his reverence for its themes make him the perfect choice to revisit this beloved film that evokes nostalgia and visceral emotion in so many of its fans.’

Phil Alden Robinson’s critically-acclaimed 1989 film about an Iowa farmer transforming his corn field into a baseball diamond received three Oscar nods and amassed $84.4M at the box office.

The ghostly flick starred James Earl Jones, Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, and Ray Liotta.

Costner threw out the first pitch during the MLB’s special neutral-site game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees last Thursday at the original Dyersville, IA farm.

’30 years ago, on the other side of that corn we filmed a movie that stood the test of time,’ the 66-year-old Oscar winning filmmaker said.

‘Tonight, thanks to that enduring impact that little movie had, it’s allowed us to come here again. But now we’re on a field that Major League Baseball made.

‘We’ve kept our promise, Major League Baseball has kept its promise, the dream is still alive. There is probably just one more question to answer – is this heaven? Yes it is. This field is for the players. Good luck today.’

FOX Sports announced Friday that the game was the most-watched regular season baseball game in 16 years, with 5.9M tuning in.
