Peyton Manning makes surprise appearance on SNL’s Weekend Update and raves about Emily in Paris

Saturday Night Live packed a bizarre one-two punch in this week’s episode, with Peyton Manning hyping up the Netflix series Emily in Paris on Weekend Update following a performance with dancing mushrooms by Katy Perry

Manning, who notoriously hosted the show to acclaim in 2007, was brought on Weekend Update to ostensibly speak with Colin Jost about the NFL Playoffs.

The two-time Super Bowl champion, however, had other interests, claiming to have completely missed the games.

‘I heard they were incredible,’ he said of the games. ‘Sounds like all the teams did a great job, lots of passing and all the touchdowns were in the end zone.’

When asked why he missed the games, he told Jost that, with an hour left to go before the first game, he decided to pass the time by watching season two of Netflix’s Emily in Paris before getting hooked.

Former NFL star Peyton Manning appeared with Colin Jost on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update

‘I watched the entire season straight through. Oh my God, Colin, this show has everything –  romance, adventure, sensuality, culture, a fresh take on feminism finally… not to mention a culinary tapestry so rich, I can only describe it as food porn.’

He was then asked by Jost about the on-again, off-again rumors that his longtime nemesis Tom Brady might be retiring.

After predicting that it was all just speculation, Manning had a suggestion: ‘If it were me I probably would retire too, if it gave me more time to watch Emily in Paris! I really think for Tom right now its just a tough decision between balancing his career and relationships… sort of like Emily.’

Manning they gave some tactical analysis of the show’s attempt to balance Lily Collins’ Emily’s personal and professional lives.

‘This is a classic showdown between Emily’s career and her love life.’

‘You know what’s not sitting on the sideline? The fashion choices. She sure knows how to drive an episode down the field with these lewks!’

Manning is then cut to wearing a beret, similar to the character in the show’s promotional materials.

‘If I’ve learned anything, it’s to follow my passions and be true to myself,’ before admitting he’d never even season season one of the show, and only got hooked on season two.

‘I don’t speak French, Colin, but thanks to Emily, I speak love.’

Episode 12 of Season 47 of the venerable sketch comedy show was hosted by veteran character actor Willem Defoe and featured returning musical guest Katy Perry, who had a performance so strange, it could only be upstaged by a Hall of Fame football player raving about a Netflix romcom.

Perry performed her new single ‘When I’m Gone’ alongside producer Alessio, which debuted at number 59 on the UK pop charts last week.

Perry, dressed in red leather chaps, sang her new techno-infused single amid a unique background.

Both performances were accentuated by mushrooms, both large ones built on the Saturday Night Live set and dancing ones that performed choreography to both songs.

The dancers displayed fans throughout the performance that read “EAT ME” in black ink.

The 11-time Grammy nominee also performed an acoustic edition of ‘Never Really Over’ from her 2020 album Smile in her first performance on the SNL stage since 2017.

Saturday Night Live announced it would return February 26, with John Mulaney coming back to host for the fifth time.

Mulaney has made offstage headlines more than on screen recently, having divorced his wife and had a baby with actress Olivia Munn.

The stand up comedian will be joined by New York City dance-rock veterans LCD Soundsystem, who return to the show for the first time since 2016.

Mulaney’s last hosting effort happened the week before the 2020 election, when he was accompanied by alternative rockers The Strokes.
