Plymouth shooting: Jake Davison was son of ‘violent thug’ who was jailed for attacking fisherman

The Plymouth ‘incel’ gunman who shot five innocent victims in a murderous rampage was the son of a ‘violent thug’ who was previously jailed for attacking a fisherman.

Self-described ‘f***ing fat ugly virgin’ and bodybuilder Jake Davison, 22, murdered his mother Maxine, 51, after bursting into her home in the Devon city with a pump-action shotgun on Thursday night.

Without saying a word Davison, dressed in black, then gunned down Sophie Martyn, 3, and her father Lee, 43, who were walking up the road.

After murdering the pair, Davison walked to an adjacent area of parkland and opened fire on dogwalker Stephen Washington, 59, before killing Kate Shepherd, 66, outside of Blush hair salon.

He then turned the gun on himself, concluding his 12-minute bloody rampage that was the worst mass shooting seen in Britain since 2010.

But family friends have since reported that Jake’s father, Mark Davison, is allegedly a violent thug who was once jailed for assaulting a fisherman in the Shetland Islands seven years ago.

Mark Davison is described as a ‘violent and dangerous individual’, and faced eight months behind bars after pleading guilty to biting his fellow crewman on the cheek ‘like an animal that holds its prey’.

The attack took place in July 2014 on King Explorer, a scallop fishing vessel while it worked 30 miles south of Scalloway.

Describing the assault, public prosecutor Duncan Mackenzie said Davison punched his Polish victim and then ‘attached himself to the man’s cheek’. He was sentenced to eight months in prison.

Davison was slammed as a ‘violent and dangerous individual’ by sheriff Philip Mann following his 2014 attack.

In 2010, Davison was been fined for racially abusing a bus passenger and was said to have alcohol issues.

He had avoided prison for ‘headbutting a dogwalker’ on Peterhead beach in 2014 after he told a court he had volunteered with a local church group, but had previously been locked up for assaulting a man in a street brawl.

A number of residents on the remote Scottish islands watched on in horror as news emerged that Jake – who was known after spending long periods of time in the Shetlands with family – was the man behind the killings.

Jake’s mother Maxine, 51, who was his first victim during the brutal shootings, and father Mark are understood to have lived on the island in the 1990s.

Mark, a fisherman by trade, was previously jailed for his part in attacking a man just off the waters in the Shetland Islands, and was fined for racially abusing a person while taking a National Express service between Aberdeen and London, reports the Daily Record.

After two minutes of knocking on the coach’s toilet door, Davison emerged with a carrier bag containing an empty bottle of vodka and pushed the driver.

Davison turned to a passenger after he asked him to stop,  shouting ‘f***ing shut up’ and ‘f***ing n****r’.

Davison’s solicitor said the actions had been inspired by his drinking, which had ‘dimmed’ his conduct.

A family friend told the Mirror: ‘Maxine and her children spent some time on Shetland and it was well-known that Jake had suffered from mental health issues for most of his life.

‘He had deteriorated recently and his mum was begging for help from the authorities but nobody did a welfare check.

‘She has paid a heavy price for this. The family are devastated this has happened.’

It was claimed his mother Maxine – who had recently recovered from cancer – begged the and police to give him urgent mental health treatment during lockdown – and it was also revealed he was still allowed to hold a valid gun licence.

Jake’s relationship with his father is understood to have been strained.

The source added: ‘His father was estranged for being a violent person with a lengthy criminal record.

‘Maxine had spent time in Shetland where her brother lives along with her nieces and nephews.

‘We are all shocked Jake has done this but not surprised. His mental health wasn’t great for a long time.

Chilling CCTV footage captured on a quiet street shows the 22-year-old incel gunman amid his horrific killing spree with his shotgun hanging by his side.

Minutes earlier, Jake Davison murdered his own mother, Maxine, at her home nearby, before going outside and randomly killing toddler Sophie Martyn and her father Lee, 43.

Davison then walks out of the cul-de-sac down a path, telling a stunned resident: ‘Nothing to worry about mate,’ before shooting dog walker Stephen Washington, 59.

In video obtained by ITV News, he is then seen walking past a house and crosses the road in the direction of Blush hair salon, where he will fatally shoot Kate Shepherd, his fifth victim.

Seconds later, Davison turns the gun on himself before armed police can reach him.

Sophie and Lee were rushed to nearby Derriford hospital, where Lee’s wife works, but both passed away despite the medics’ best efforts.

Tributes have flooded in for the pair who lost their lives during a six-minute scene of carnage, as it was revealed Sophie was adopted by Lee and his partner two years earlier.

One friend said in tribute: ‘You were such a kind selfless gentleman who put everyone else before yourself we have shared many memories together, I will never forget the things in life you have done for me.’

Jake’s family had desperately applied for professional help with Davison’s ADHD according to a close family friend, with the gunman being described as ‘introverted’ and a ‘troubled soul’.

The friend told the Telegraph: ‘Jake was always very quiet growing up, almost introverted. He was a troubled soul.

‘He got into guns and he knew everything there was to know about them.

‘Maxine and Jake used to be close. You’d always see him helping her with the shopping at Lidl up the road, but then his views changed and he went against women and he became misogynist.

‘They clashed a lot about that.’
