Police rescue woman trapped in her minivan in freezing Ohio river

Dramatic bodycam video has captured the moment police jumped into a freezing Ohio river to rescue a woman trapped in her sinking minivan.

Several officers helped rescue the 24-year-old woman in the early hours of Monday morning after she fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the icy Mahoning River in Alliance. 

Police say the woman was driving home from work at 2.30pm when she crashed her minivan through a guard rail and plunged 14 feet into the river. 

The woman, identified as Alexis, managed to call 911 from inside the vehicle as it started to sink.

She could be heard telling the dispatcher that she was trapped and that her car was filling with water.

‘I’m really scared. Okay so I just sit here? I’m in a van,’ she could be heard asking the dispatcher.

‘It’s really bad right now. It’s coming through. I’m going to drown ain’t I. 

‘Please get me out. I’m having a panic attack right now.’

Bodycam footage shows the officer repeatedly saying he can’t breathe due to the freezing temperatures. 

With the front of minivan almost entirely submerged, the officer could be heard telling the woman to move into the back of the vehicle. 

He then smashed through the back seat window using a pickaxe before pulling her out.

Police said the van became completely submerged just a few minutes later. 

The woman was taken to hospital for minor injuries but was later released. It is not yet clear if the officer who jumped in the water suffered any injuries. 

Temperatures in the town of Alliance were near freezing on Monday morning.
