‘She reminded me of my mother’: Biden says of The Queen

President Joe Biden had warm words of praise for the Queen on Sunday, saying she reminded him of his mother and that he invited her to the White House.

Biden told reporters after his meeting with the 95-year-old monarch that she brought to mind Catherine Biden, who the family called Jean.

‘I don’t think she’d be insulted but she reminded me of my mother, the look of her and just the generosity,’ the president said before he boarded Air Force One for Brussels.

‘We had a long talk,’ Biden said, ‘and she was very generous.’

Jean Biden died in 2010 at the age of 92. She was an influential presence in her son’s life. The president mentions her often in his speeches, describing how she helped him overcome his childhood stutter and how she supported him after his first wife and daughter died in a car crash.

She joined him on the campaign trail when he ran for Senate and when he was Barack Obama’s running mate.

Jean and Joe Biden had four children. The president is the eldest. President Biden speaks about the hard times his father faced in Scranton, Penn., when he lost his job in an economic downturn. The family moved to Wilmington, where there were more opportunities, and the senior Biden became a successful used-car salesman.

After a formal welcome in the courtyard of Windsor Castle, the Queen hosted Joe and Jill Biden for a private tea.

The president said that during their conversation, the Queen asked him about world leaders Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said she also asked what life in the White House was like.

‘We could fit the White House in the courtyard,’ he said he told her, referring to Windsor Castle.

Asked if he had invited her to the White House, Biden responded: ‘yes.’

The Queen welcomed the Bidens to Windsor with a Guard of Honour and tea at the castle Sunday.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden landed at Berkshire royal residence on Marine One just before 5pm, after attending the G7 summit in Cornwall.

The celebration consisted of a reduced parade in the grounds of Windsor Castle, instead of central London, due to the COVID pandemic.

President Biden met the Queen at the dais in the quadrangle, and a Guard of Honour, consisting of the Queen’s Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards, performed a Royal Salute.

The Officer Commanding the Guard of Honour, Maj James Taylor, accompanied Biden, along with Maj Gen Christopher Ghika, in an inspection of the Honour Guard.

The President then entered the castle through the Sovereign’s Entrance at 5.18pm to enjoy tea with the Queen.

The Bidens had met the Queen on Friday when she attended a reception for G7 leaders at the Eden Project.

The carefully-choreographed arrangements to welcome Biden echo the welcome given to Donald Trump in 2018, when the controversial then-US president travelled to Windsor to meet the monarch.

Trump and the Queen had afternoon tea together in the castle’s Oak Room, with the meeting lasting longer than expected.

It was due to last around half-an-hour, but overran by almost 20 minutes.
