Local authorities have confirmed that a skull in sunglasses that had been displayed on a fireplace for over a year belonged to an elderly man who disappeared not far from the area in 2012.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office (MSCO) shared in a Monday Facebook press release that the DNA from the skull matched the DNA from the family members of Junior Willie McCann.

McCann, a 79-year-old from Gobey in Morgan County, was last seen on September 9, 2012, local outlet reported at the time.

Authorities state that the skull had been found allegedly on March 2019 by a person living in the same area McCann was from.

The MSCO retrieved the skull after learning of its existence, and sent it off to Knox County Regional Forensics Center and the UT Department of Anthropology for positive identification, the release states.

A joint search was conducted on the area where the skull had been supposedly found, the MSCO said.

‘Speculation and rumor has been that Junior Willie McCann was possibly killed by a family member who is now deceased as well,’ they added in the release.

At the time of his disappearance, local outlets described McCann as being 5’5″, 125lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing a blue, uniform-type button down shirt that said ‘JR’ on the right chest, along with dark blue pants.
