Surfer Bethany Hamilton shares ‘tricks’ for caring for her kids with one arm

Bethany Hamilton has opened up about how she cares for her three children with one arm following the birth of her youngest son, Micah, saying she uses her feet to help change her two-month-old’s diaper.

The 31-year-old surfer, who lost her left arm in a shark attack when she was 13, took to Instagram on Wednesday to talk ‘a little about mom life with one arm.’ She and her husband Adam Dirks welcomed their youngest son, Micah, in February.

‘I’m raising our third son, so the tricks and adaptations are getting better with each child,’ she explained. ‘When they are this young and have the wobbly head and need constant attention, nursing, diaper changes, tummy soothing, lots of sleep and of course smiles, kisses and more.’

Bethany went on to detail the creative ways she cares for her newborn, admitting that it’s not always easy with just one arm.

‘I use my feet to help with diaper changing, lots of pillows with nursing, a baby carrier all throughout the day and tricky styles of holding to keep baby’s head up,’ she wrote.

‘Sometimes it can get frustrating but I just gotta keep moving forward, have lil breaks and keep it positive!’ she added. ‘Plus I remember I’ve done it before. And as a family we make it work!’

Along with the candid post, she shared a photo of herself holding a laughing Micah with one arm while gazing down at him with love.

‘Loving our lil Micah and looking forward to more life with him! Cheering on all you mommas out there grinding, loving and doing your best!’ she concluded the post.

The proud mom has shared plenty of photos of her family’s newest addition, including a snapshot of herself holding him in a baby carrier on her chest.

Earlier this month, she posted a picture of herself smiling while Micah was lying on her chest, apparently crying. In the post, she talked about the difficulties of motherhood in general.

‘Mom life. Not always smiles. The balance. The ups and downs,’ she wrote. ‘The most beautiful gift but also so incredibly challenging… Sleep deprivation. They cry. They stretch us mentally and emotionally. I cry.

‘But then they smile and coo and nurse sweetly,’ she continued. ‘Thankful for this life and the beauty of motherhood. ‘Thankful for my family, friends, my husband and boys. Grateful to God to have this beautiful challenge and joy.

‘You got this mom and dads out there!!! Stay positive.’

Bethany and Adam announced in February that their third son had arrived on Valentine’s Day. The couple also has sons Tobias, five, and Wesley, three.

She did not let the incident impact her dreams of surfing, however, and she began competing professionally four years later in 2007.

In 2010, she was the twentieth ranked woman among surfers and has placed first in at least eight different surfing competitions in her career.

Bethany’s story became an inspiration to many after she wrote about it in the book Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board.

The book adapted into the 2011 film Soul Surfer, starring Dennis Quaid and Carrie Underwood in 2011. Anna Sophia Robb portrayed Bethany.
