A woman in her 70s has died and five others were injured after a driver hit multiple people over a mile-long stretch in Portland, according to police.   

Police received a call shortly after 1pm that a driver had hit a pedestrian in the Southeastern part of the city, according to Portland Police Bureau spokesman Derek Carmon. 

The pedestrians and vehicles were struck along several blocks west from Southeast 33rd Avenue and Stark Street down to Southeast 13th Avenue.

Additional calls then came from people saying a person driving the same suspect vehicle, a Honda Element, was striking other people and vehicles, he said.

Police said the woman, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the Oregon Health & Science University hospital. 

A witness told the Oregonian that the woman had come to meet him for an appointment at the corner of Washington Street and 19th Avenue, when he saw her get hit by the car.

The witness said he was walking toward her when the suspect reversed and hit her again. 

He said the car made a U-turn and went toward 19th Avenue to Stark Street.

Officials said the other pedestrians suffered non-critical injuries. Authorities said that there were other victims who did not need to go to the hospital. 

Images shared online showed damaged cars, a bicycle and first responders transporting a victim to an area hospital.

One man revealed on Twitter that his wife was in the area at the time of the incident. 

‘My wife is there, the piece of shit hit 8 people on purpose and was speeding 50-60 mph. My wife was parked on the street and he hit her car while fleeing,’ the man wrote. 

Police said the suspect crashed the vehicle in the area of Southeast Stark Street and Southeast 18th Avenue. 

‘The driver of that vehicle fled on foot,’ police said, adding that ‘community members who witnessed the crash corralled the suspect until officers arrived on scene and took him into custody’. 

A photo taken at the scene shows the man handcuffed on the ground as police cars surround him.  

The suspect is being processed and arrest information will be available at a later time, police said.
