The woman behind Mrs Tablescapes predicts the hottest trends in table decorating for 2022
A table stylist has dubbed ‘tablescaping’ as the hot new concept for 2022 and predicted the seven top trends for decorating your table including destination themes, maximalism and timeless, nostalgic pieces.
Founder of tableware accessories and homewares brand Mrs Tablescape, Carolyn Dorrian, from Sydney, has shared her tips to help you make a ‘fashion statement’ at your next dinner party and decorate your table like a professional.

1. Reviving the placemat and tablecloth
Modern placemats are now much trendier and still very useful for protecting your table from spills and scratches.
You can eat on them and put them away instead of changing the whole tablecloth.
Practical considerations aside, placemats and tablecloths add warmth and texture to a table, can be mixed and matched to suit your needs and come in all sorts of fun shapes and colours.

2. Nostalgia
Formal entertaining may have waned but more and more sets of china are showing up on social media’s most stylish ‘tablescapes’.

In 2022, as we all become used to the new normal of a post-pandemic world, the trend of using dining tables and food as a fun form of escapism remains.
As travel disruptions throw holiday plans up in the air, it’s still highly desirable to transform dining tables into entire destinations.

6. Seventies patterns
The 70s gave us macramé, rattan, houseplants and a sometimes hideous mishmash of clashing brown and orange prints.
The playful eclecticism of the era meant the people of the time were unafraid to bring together elements from other eras that inspired them, even if it didn’t always work.

Ms Dorrian was originally a lawyer but found her love for ‘tablescaping’ while stuck at home throughout the Covid lockdowns.
She turned her her new found hobby into a successful business, launching Mrs Tablescape earlier this year.
‘With a table you have many objects and colours to be creative with and working with a lot of options adds to the joyous atmosphere when spending time with friends, family or guests,’ she said.
