Charli D’Amelio has become the first TikTok star to reach 100 million followers — just days after facing fierce backlash for her ‘rude’ treatment of her personal chef in her family’s controversial dinner video.
It’s been a rollercoaster of a week for the 16-year-old, who lost one million followers in one day over the fallout. She broke down in tears on Instagram Live on Thursday, revealing online trolls were telling her to kill herself over the ‘misunderstanding.’
Not only did she gain all the missing followers back, but she also went on to attract a million more and spent Sunday morning celebrating with her fans on social media.

Making history: The 16-year-old celebrate by posting a series of videos on the platform and happily thanked her fans
After waking up to the news, Charli filmed an Instagram Live, saying: ‘I don’t even know how to react, mostly because this doesn’t feel real. How do people even react to this? I just genuinely don’t know what to do.’
‘I’m in my bathroom by myself watching edits on Twitter because they’re making me cry. I just genuinely do not know what to do. I’m so confused,’ she continued.
‘Life doesn’t feel real. It’s just so weird to think a little over a year ago, I was in Connecticut doing regular school, doing nothing, and now I’m living in LA.’
Charli later announced that in honor of her milestone, TikTok will be donating $100,000 to the American Dance Movement, an organization that works to improve and increase access to dance education in the U.S.
‘I’ve been dancing my entire life, and I’m so thankful to be able to give back [to] the community that made me the person that I am,’ she said of the donation.
Excited: ‘Thank you guys so so so much, I cannot believe that there is 100 million supporters following me right now,’ she said in one TikTok clip. ‘That is insane, oh my goodness’
The influencer went on to celebrate the news on Twitter, where she invited her fans to join her on Zoom calls to thank them.
‘IS THIS REAL LIFE RIGHT NOW,’ she tweeted. ‘100 MILLION PEOPLE SUPPORTING ME!! I TRULY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS REAL.’
Of course, Charli also marked the milestone by posting a number of TikTok videos on Sunday, once again thanking her followers for their support.
‘Thank you guys so so so much, I cannot believe that there is 100 million supporters following me right now,’ she said in one clip. ‘That is insane, oh my goodness.’
‘I feel like this is a dream, kind of waiting to wake up,’ she admitted.
Charli, who is a competitive dancer from Norwalk, Connecticut, posted her first TikTok in June 2019. She had a number of videos go viral thanks to her dances featuring choreography, montages, and lip-syncs.
Shocked: Charli was showered with confetti during an Instagram Live. She later announced TikTok is donating $100,000 to the American Dance Movement on her behalf
Big day: The influencer went on to celebrate the news on Twitter, where she invited her fans to join her on Zoom calls to thank them
Within a year and a half, she has reached her history-making goal of 100 million TikTok followers, an incredible fete on any platform.
Kylie Jenner, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian are a few of the A-list stars who have over 100 million followers on Instagram.
Charli, who is one of TikTok’s highest-earning stars, made $4 million from June 2019 to June 2020, according to Forbes.
While she was on track to reach 100 million followers, she was likely surprised it happened after such a disastrous week.
Just last Thursday, the TikTok star broke down on an Instagram Live over the backlash she was facing over her family’s video featuring their personal chef.
What a weekend: On Saturday, Charli celebrate reach 99 million followers (again) with a dance. The next day, she had a million more
Bump in the road: It’s been a rollercoaster of a week for Charli, who lost a million followers over her controversial dinner video. Within days, she gained them back plus one million more
‘Seeing how people reacted to this, like, I don’t even know if I want to do this anymore,’ she sobbed. ‘Like this is messed up stuff that people are saying. Like people telling me to hang myself.’
‘People just blatantly disrespecting the fact that I’m still a human being is not OK at all,’ she continued ‘Like you can hate on me for whatever I’ve done, but the fact that all of this is happening because [of] a misunderstanding.
‘Like I just feel like that’s not OK, and if this is the community that I’m in and the community that I put myself in, I don’t know if I want to do that anymore.’
A tearful Charli then urged her followers to be kind to others on social media.
‘I know that this is gonna be a huge joke to whoever sees it, but like, at the end of the day, just, like, be nice,’ she said.
Backlash: Charli and her sister Dixie were both slammed for their appalling table manners and ‘rude’ treatment of their personal chef Aaron May in their first Dinner with the D’Amelios video
Heartbreaking: Charli broke down in an Instagram Live on Thursday, revealing that people have been cruelly telling her to kill herself
Lesson to learn: She insisted ‘all of this is happening because [of] a misunderstanding’ and begged people to be ‘nice’ on social media
‘I feel like it’s not that hard, and you can say whatever. You can say I’m disrespectful, you can say I don’t have basic human decency, but at the end of the day, I’m still a person.’
In a follow-up tweet, the teen star said she plans on moving on from the criticism because she knows she is a ‘good person.’
‘Tomorrow I will be back posting normal content with a smile on my face!’ she wrote. ‘At the end of the day I know I am a good person with a good heart and I will never change that about myself. I love you all!!’
The video in question was the debut of their new Dinner with the D’Amelios series that is being featured on their recently launched family YouTube channel.
The TikTok stars sat down with their parents, Marc and Heidi, and their first mystery guest, YouTuber and beauty influencer James Charles.
Losing fans: Charli had more than 99.5 million followers as of Wednesday evening. That number then plummeted to 98.5 million before rising again
It’s over: Charli tweeted on Thursday night that she planned to move on from the controversy and start posting ‘normal content’ again
Reaching out: Earlier in the day, she shared a link to a mental resource for fans who are struggling
Hitting back: James Charles and chef Aaron May have also defended the girls, with the latter confirming someone from production had come up with the idea of feeding them snails
The episode had been trending on YouTube after it was shared on Monday, but many people were less than impressed with what they saw.
Throughout the dinner, Charli and Dixie made faces and gagged in response to their chef Aaron May’s offerings. Charli later asked for ‘Dino nuggets’ while Dixie, 19, ran outside to throw up after eating a snail that was in the traditional paella.
Charli, who reigns supreme as TikTok’s most-popular star, had more than 99.5 million followers as of Wednesday evening. That number then plummeted to 98.5 million before rising again.
Ironically, before the controversy, Charli was just 500,000 followers shy of reaching her goal of one million by the end of the year, which she mentioned in the video.
‘I wish I had more time. Imagine if I hit 100 million a year after hitting one million,’ she told James.
‘Was the 95 million not enough for you?’ James sarcastically replied, though he stuck up for his friend on Twitter.
It’s over: Over the weekend, Charli took to her Instagram Story to share a photo of herself, her sister, and James posing with Aaron to show that she was moving on
Start: During the video in question, Charli, Dixie, and their parents ate with James for the first episode of their new YouTube series Dinner with the D’Amelios
Not funny: Charli was accused of being a ‘brat’ during the dinner. She made faces and sarcastically clapped when her father introduced their chef
Slightly more restrained: The teen also looked a bit ill when she found out there were snails in the dish
Spoiled? While eating, Charli rudely asked out loud: ‘Do we have any Dino nuggets?’ She also complained about not reaching 100 million followers by the end of the year
‘This Charli situation is NOT sitting right with me… 100M followers in one year & y’all expect her to know how to be a perfect role model? Death threats because she’s a picky eater & made a joke about a milestone? 30+ year olds dragging someone half their age? Feels familiar,’ he tweeted on Thursday, seemingly referencing the scandals and backlash he has faced in the past.
Dixie, whose behavior was arguably more abhorrent, lost about 100,000 followers over the controversy, going from 43.9 million to 43.8 million in less than 24 hours, but by Friday she had gained them back and then some. As of Monday, she had 44.7 million followers.
The older D’Amelio sister responded to the backlash with a TikTok, insisting people should ‘know the full story’ before criticizing her and sending her hateful comments.
‘My family and I have been working with Chef Aaron May for a couple of months now, working on content for our channel and working on content for his channel, and [we’ve] made an amazing friendship,’ she said.
‘Before I even get into anything, I’m so grateful for every single person that follows me, every single person I care about, every single person I work with, every single person who works with me because I’m just so grateful for all of the opportunities I’ve had.’
Dixie insisted the reaction to her throwing up at the dinner was taken out of context. She claimed she wasn’t being ‘disrespectful’ toward the chef, saying the video’s final cut doesn’t include the footage of Aaron and her team trying to get her to eat the snail, knowing she has a sensitive stomach.
Table manners: Dixie made show of eating the snail, but she later said that Aaron and her team talked her into eating it because they knew how she would react
Seriously? As soon as she bit into the snail, she turned over and started to gag at the table
Insult: Dixie then ran outside to throw up while their chef asked if she was being serious
‘My team knows I throw up a lot. I throw up at the smell, the thought, or the taste of anything. So, when they saw the snails, they were like, “Oh, let’s get her and try to see if we can get a reaction out of her,”‘ she explained. ‘I love [our] chef, and I would never disrespect him in any way.’
Aaron confirmed Dixie’s story, agreeing that the backlash has been ‘blown out of proportion.’
‘Someone on production thought it would be funny to feed Dixie and Charli snails,” May told The Hollywood Fix. ‘They didn’t take it the best. I love Dixie and Charli, I’ve worked with them before, I’m going to work with them again. Those girls are the greatest, I love them. It was all fun and games.’
Over the weekend, Charli took to her Instagram Story to share a photo of herself, her sister, and James — who had a chicken nugget in his hand — posing with Aaron to show that she was moving on.
Since the video was posted, critics have been calling out Charli and Dixie for their behavior, with many insisting James was the only one with manners at the table.
The video has been viewed 14.1 million times and earned more than 131,000 comments, though many of them were negative.
The purge: Dixie, 19, also lost 100,000 followers, going from 43.9 million to 43.8 million in just one day
No sweat: Like her sister, Dixie gained all the followers she lost back and then some
Not what you think: Dixie addressed her vomiting during the dinner in a TikTok video on Wednesday, claiming it was taken out of context
Influential: The entire D’Amelio family has millions of followers, though Charli has the most by far
‘This is just sad,’ one critic wrote. ‘It’s a shame nobody taught these girls manners and an even bigger shame we gave them such a big platform.’
‘Bruh they seem spoiled as hell,’ someone else noted. ‘They’re acting like little brats. The poor chef.’
‘My mom would’ve slapped me if I acted like that [at] the dinner table,’ another insisted, with many agreeing with him.
‘I’ve never had a problem with the D’Amelios but their behavior was just disgusting,’ one critic shared. ‘I feel so bad for the chef. They acted so bratty, like… there are people who are struggling to feed their families.’
A number of people pointed out that James was doing a better job of scolding the girls for their bad behavior than their parents were.
‘James was literally the only mature one here,’ one person wrote. ‘The fact that HE was the one scolding them and not [their] own parents, says a lot.’
‘It’s sad that James was checking them instead of their own parents,’ someone else agreed, while another added: ‘The only person I see that has manners is James Charles. Not even the parents…’
‘I’ve been telling y’all that this family is fake and their true colors are gonna be shown.’ one YouTuber user insisted.
