TikTok user @mattilathehun, 22, revealed she found out she was dating her cousin after he bought her a DNA testing kit for her birthday
Sharing the clip, she explained: ‘My mom is adopted and I never really knew my biological father.
‘So I was mostly interested in the health information you know to see if there was anything I needed to look out for. And he got one for himself because they were on sale at the time.
‘So we got the results back about a month later and I was looking through the list of relatives because the only person I know I’m technically related to is my mom.
‘And I scrolled down and turned to my boyfriend and said “hey, this is pretty nifty, I’m related to someone with the same name as you”.
She explained that the DNA kits were on offer, so her boyfriend at the time also bought one for himself to do
‘And that’s how I found out I was dating my cousin.’
The TikTok user later made a second video explaining that the website said the couple, who broke up earlier this month, were ‘most likely third cousins’, which means they share a set of great-great grandparents.
She said: ‘However, I was able to do a bit of research into my biological father’s side of the family and actually found someone that had done a genealogical report back to the 1500s.
‘Based on stuff in that person’s research as well as the percentage of DNA that my ex and I share, which was a little bit too high to be third cousins.
When she was looking through a list of her genetic relations and spotted someone with the same surname as her boyfriend and said ‘this is nifty’
‘I’m pretty sure that we are actually second cousins, related through my paternal great grandmother, Katerina.’
She added: ‘My ex is a great guy and I still care for him deeply, but yeah…’

She later researched her biological father’s family and said with the amount of DNA the couple share, it’s likely that they’re second cousins
Another added: ‘My aunt and uncle didn’t find out they were cousins until they had been married like 10 years.’
A third wrote: ‘I was going to a boy’s house to make out when my dad asked me what his grandpa’s name was. I went and asked him on msn – cousins.’
