TIME releases its Next 100 list of up-and-coming stars ‘poised to make history’

TIME magazine has unveiled its 2021 Next List, celebrating ‘100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future’.

The publication’s editors revealed the full list on Wednesday, with poet Amanda Gorman, TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, and anti-Trump Republicans Ben Sasse and Adam Kinziger, all receiving a coveted spot.

CNN‘s Abby Phillip and MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki stars were also honored with a mention, as the magazine’s editorial director Dan Mcasai proclaimed: ‘Everyone on this list is poised to make history’.

The list consisted of up-and-coming names from a variety of countries and industries, including science, medicine, politics and tech. It was also notable for its racial diversity – with less than 40 white people included.

Gorman, 22, shot to fame after reading her poem ‘The Hill We Climb’ at President Biden’s inauguration last month – an honor which catapulted her onto the list.

Hamitlon creator Lin-Manuel Miranda penned a tribute to the poet for TIME, gushing: ‘If the hardest part of an artist’s job is to fully and honestly meet the moment, Amanda delivered a master class. She spoke truth to power and embodied clear-eyed hope to a weary nation. She revealed us to ourselves.’

Meanwhile, 16-year-old TikTok star Charlie D’Amelio was another young name chosen by TIME to be included on the 100 Next list.

The Connecticut-based teen films choreographed dance videos for the social media app, where she has gained more than 100 million followers.

D’Amelio counts a number of famous fans, including Jennifer Lopez, who told TIME: ‘When Charli dances, she connects. She’s the biggest new teenage star right now, and it’s not simply that she dances on TikTok. She’s the best at it. When she dances, people want to be like her. Her authenticity comes through the screen.’

Both Gorman and D’Amelio were featured under the ‘Phenoms’ section of the 100 Next List.

Elsewhere, the ‘Politics’ section of the list featured three U.S. senators.

Democrats Jon Ossoff, 33, and Rev. Raphael Warnock, 51, were both honored with an inclusion after winning their run-off races in Georgia last month before being sworn into the senate.

The list also included Republican Senator Ben Sasse – one of seven GOP senators who voted to convict President Trump during his second impeachment trial last week.

Mitt Romney – another GOP senator who voted to convict Trump – wrote a gushing profile of Sasse for TIME, cooing: ‘With a mix of self-deprecating humor, historical anecdotes and compelling logic, Sasse grabs and holds audiences from the Senate floor to the Nebraska campaign trail.

‘But Sasse’s rising national influence is derived less from his oratory skills and education than from his character… He does not shrink from speaking the truth regardless of the political consequence.’

Elsewhere, another anti-Trump Republican politician featured on the 100 Next list.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who represents Illinois’ 16th Congressional district, appeared to impress TIME’s editors by speaking out against President Trump in recent months.

‘Congressman Adam Kinzinger has stood up for the truth when it was most challenging and least convenient. In the wake of the insurrection at the Capitol in January, Adam was the first Republican member of Congress to step forward and call for the removal of President Trump from office via the 25th Amendment. In standing up for what he believed was right, Adam proved the measure of his courage,’ a profile of the Congressman read.

There were no Trump-supporting politicians included on the list, nor where there any of his prominent supporters in the media.

Instead, TIME chose to honor CNN’s Abby Phillip and MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki.

Phillip, 32, has just been given her own cable show, while Kornacki became a household name for his enthusiastic coverage of presidential election night count back in November.

Actors including Ben Affleck’s ex Ana De Armas and Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page were chosen by TIME’s editors for inclusion on the list.

De Armas, 32, fell for Affleck while filming the erotic thriller Deep Water, which is set for release later this year.

But while the pair have since split, TIME is better that the Cuban-Spanish starlet will soon become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actress.

They are also hedging their bets on Page, 31, who became an overnight sensation thanks to his role as Simon Bassett in Bridgerton.

Meanwhile, Dua Lipa, 25,  and Phoebe Bridgers, 26, were among the musicians named to the list.
