Today show hosts dress up as beloved Broadway characters as GMA SKIPS costumes for Halloween

Good Morning America and the Today show faced off once again on Friday during the two morning shows’ annual Halloween broadcasts.
The Today show team went for a Broadway theme this year, with Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, and the gang dressing up as favorite characters from the Great White Way, including Elphaba from Wicked and King George from Hamilton.
Over on GMA, though, things were looking a bit different this year, with Michael Strahan, George Stephanopoulos, and Cecilia Vega skipping the dress-up games — and in their place, sending three little kids to man the news desk for the morning broadcast.

Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb picked Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked for their costumes

‘I love the idea that you think that someone is bad, but you have to look a little deeper, and maybe you’ll see another side,’ Savannah said. ‘And Hoda’s my girl! I’m her Elphaba and she’s my Glinda’

Hamilton! Craig Melvin was Alexander Hamilton, while Al Roker was King George
Broadway was shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there’s still no word as to when musicals and plays will come back.
Located in Rockefeller Plaza, the Today show’s studio is just a stone’s throw from most of Broadway’s theaters, and the hosts played homage to their neighbors by dressing up as some of Broadway’s most beloved characters.
Dylan Dreyer and Sheinelle Jones were up first as Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart and Roxie Hart from Chicago.
The pair wore matching glitzy dresses and even put on a dance performance for viewers.
Craig Melvin did his best Alexander Hamilton — from his namesake musical, Hamilton — donning a perfect replica of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s outfit from the Tony-winning show.

He was joined by Al Roker, who told him ‘You’ll Be Back’ as the mad King George.
‘I do feel regal,’ he admitted.
Al also spoke to Christopher Jackson, who originated the role of George Washington in the show — and asked him how to best channel his inner royalty.
‘I don’t think you have to work that hard, sir,’ the star told him.

And finally, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb were a wicked team as the main characters from Wicket, Elphaba and Glinda.

‘I have never, ever been a princessy, pretty Halloween costume kind of person. To be Glinda the Good Witch is kind of amazing,’ Hoda said

Savannah donned green face paint as the tragically misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, while Hoda was a good witch in a blue dress, blonde wig, and tiara.
‘I have never, ever been a princessy, pretty Halloween costume kind of person. To be Glinda the Good Witch is kind of amazing,’ Hoda said.
Savannah even interviewed the original Elphaba, Idina Menzel, to ask her advice.
‘It’s really about learning to harness my own power as a woman, to not be afraid of my ferocity,’ Idina told her.
