Sinner 2-1 Fritz*

The crowd realise they have a part to play and roar Fritz on – he duly obliges by acing his first serve in style. Sinner this time goes long with his next return and Fritz is only denied a second ace by going slightly long with his serve.

He looks in much better form with a strong forehand down the line leaving Sinner helpless and takes the game without reply to finally get a foothold in the final.

Sinner* 2-0 Fritz

Both players are hitting the ball as sweet as you like in the early exchanges, but Sinner is just that bit better with his accuracy.

Fritz makes two errors when hitting attempts long to give his opponent a 30-0 lead and Sinner puts himself into a commanding position by forcing the home favourite to scurry from side-to-side.

He wins the game with his second shot in the final exchange and that is a huge statment of intent from Sinner.

Sinner 1-0 Fritz*

Sinner breaks Fritz’s first serve with a brilliant forehand onto the line. The American hits long with his next effort after a brief short rally, but recovers with Sinner hitting into the net to make it 30-15.

We’re treated to another flurry of shots as Sinner takes control with two break points but is made to fight for the victory only for Fritz to miss his smash volley into the court.

Sinner takes an early break point and leads.

Fritz to serve first

Sinner wins the coin toss as Fritz incorrectly calls heads and the world No.1 will receive first at the Arthur Ashe stadium.

Here we go…

Out come the two dreaming players into a cocophony of noise as those in attendance wait to see a new US Open champion crowned.

The majority of that noise is understandably for home favourite Taylor Fritz, but there is some Italian support on display for Sinner who is looking to further build on his world No.1 status.

We’ll be getting the match underway shortly and you won’t miss a swing of the action with Mail Sport’s live updates.

Jannik Sinner: ‘This is a special occasion’

Jannik Sinner has just been speaking before heading out to the court. He knows the task at hand, beating an American on his own turf, but hopes are high for him.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘I feel like every final is different, happy to be here, this is a special occasion. The crowd has been amazing, very fair, playing against an American is not easy but it’s normal in New York.

Plenty of support for Fritz

Tennis royalty in the house

Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam winner, has been snapped arriving at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.

Sharapova famously won the US Open once in 2006, when she beat Justine Henin in straight sets.

She’ll be hoping for a fantastic game of tennis this evening!

ICYMI: Sabalenka wins women’s singles

If tonight’s clash is anything like the women’s singles final between Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pergula, well then we are in for a treat.

The Belarusian emerged victorious 7-5 7-5 to beat the American in what was an intense battle – and it ensured redemption for Sabalenka after her defeat in the final last year.

The home crowd at Flushing Meadows will be hoping for better luck for Fritz this evening.

Mail Sport’s Matt Lambert was in attendance last night and you can read his report on the action below…
