‘I know that I can go beyond 2020 and still be competitive. My body feels great. It’s just personally what I decide I want to do with my life.

‘If I ever want a kid, I probably should do it sooner rather than later, but I’m flexible on that. I’m just going along and seeing what happens and where I am mentally after the Games.

‘I don’t want to cut short my volleyball career either. I know that I could give (the 2024 Games )in Paris a run if I wanted to. We’ll see after Tokyo.

She was a high school volleyball player and only switched to beach volleyball four years ago after failing to make the US team for Rio.

She said: ‘. ‘It feels like such a distant memory. That was my life from age eight to 26. That was all I lived and breathed. And now, I almost can’t remember it.

‘In the beginning, I was like, ‘I’m an indoor player who switched to the beach’.

Referring to missing out on Rio, she added: ‘I feel like I’ve shed that other part of my identity.

‘It made me evaluate everything. Yeah, I love volleyball, but I love it because I’m chasing the biggest goal. Once that was taken away, it took away a little bit of my purpose.

‘It really appealed to me on the beach that, if you get the results, nobody gets to say ‘no’ to you.’

Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland beat Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka for bronze.
